newbie with a few questions here

hello everyone! i'm new to the forum, just joined up. I have been a pretty heavy smoker since i was 16 years old (im 19 years old now). I've never really "enjoyed" cigarettes very much and tried many times to quit for health reasons but have always failed until I was introduced to swedish snus! I have been smoke free for about two weeks now ever since I started using swedish snus and I will never look back, snus is way better!

Anyways, just had a few questions for you guys. After buying/trying marlboro and camel snus (I know, shame on me, disgusting!) I decided to visit my local tobacco store and try out the real swedish stuff. I bought a can of General Portions and General White Portions. I've tried both, but I enjoy the stronger taste/juices of the regular portions more.
It seems like both have a very distinct taste, I would say this is because of the General brand? Do other snus brands have this lemon/peppery taste as well? I like these snus but I was wondering if someone could recommend me a brand with a more straight "tobacco" flavor snus....or if somebody has an overall favorite that they would like to recommend I am open to suggestions for my next few cans of snus!

I feel so much better now that I am smoke-free and even better that I found this forum to discuss snus with other people. Thanks again guys!

    Hello and welcome.

    I'm a newbie too.

From my 2 months experience (and I also started with General regular portions) I think Ettan will be the one you should try.

My favourite ones right now are: General Onyx (a bit stronger but delicious), General regular portions, Ettan regular and white portions and Gustavus (I think you can't order that from the US).

I'm trying the Grovsnus Black right now. It's tobacco flavour too but it's a little bit strong. I'm still in the experimenting phase.

Tried a few portions of Kronan and I didn't liked, so back into the fridge. Maybe in a few weeks I'll change my mind.

Congrats for giving up the cigs.

"Traditional" snus flavor, as exemplified by much of the General line, features the flavor of a citrus fruit, bergamot, not well known on this side of the pond. Scandinavians are nuts for it and so it has been used as a snus flavoring for ages. Some here love it, tolerate it, or despise it but each to his own of course. The explosion of snus flavorings has arrived at its current variety only in the past half dozen years or so consequently trying as many things as possible when starting out is highly recommended. There are many "straight" tobacco flavored versions. Ettan, Grov, Thunder Original, and a goodly number of others are available in varying nicotine strengths.

thanks for the fast reply guys! I was thinking of getting a little stronger snus, perhaps General Onyx, but I'm guessing that has the same bergamot flavor as the other General snus have (correct me if I am wrong). It seems like Ettan is a popular brand next to General. Do Ettan regulars have a bergamot flavor as well? I personally don't love the bergamot flavor but I don't hate it, i can tolerate it and don't mind it, I would just like to see what other flavors there are out there without the bergamot flavor that I might enjoy possibly even more. thanks again!

Well let me mention Los as well as to me even in the general line the flavor is much more "taboccey" in the los varieties, usually.

Ettan is pure tobacco with some smoke flavor added, and it's quite salty. There is a subdued taste of hazelnut which is typical for air cured Kentucky tobacco. The lös of Ettan is much better than the portions IMHO.

As an ex-smoker I think you should try Skruf Stark or Skruf Extra Stark as well. It has bergamot, but the taste is moderated by rose oil - sounds weird, but it's a great combination of flavors, not at all like perfume. The tobacco taste is dominant overall.

              Cheers!

Welcome to SnusOn. Onyx will have roughly the same taste sans the pepper as the General. I second the Ettan or Tre Ankre. Both are a more traditional tobacco taste. The Jackobssons line is a really good brand for the stong nic hit as well.

wow great suggestions here! yea I am thinking of moving onto a stronger nicotine snus because i am an ex-smoker to make sure I have it under control. Ettan sounds like the next best thing here so I might have to give that a try and I also have been looking at Skruf Portions as well. I feel like I should try a few more portions before I try any Los varieties so I can better compare as I am still a newbie.

I haven't had any luck finding a strong portion for Ettan, perhaps they only carry 8mg nicotine portions only? Either way I will probably include it in my next order as to give it a chance as well as a can of Skruf Strong Portions. Any other recommendations, possibly fruity-flavored snus that tastes good? Thanks!

I'll echo others here on Ettan and Grov for a brand with a more straight "tobacco" flavor snus... I prefer the Ettan though... I think you should also try and may like General Extra Sterk, General Onyx and Nick And Johnny for a stronger snus to help with any leftover cigg cravings you may have and will help keep you off the smokes...

For some reason when I composed that list I was thinking more in terms of the non bergamot flavors (ie lemon + pepper).

Here is a list of the more natural tobacco selections

                          Ettan
                          Grov
                          Skruf
Gellivare or Landstroms (both los only)
                          Roda
                          Tre Ankare
                          Phantom Brown
                          Prima Fint
Probe (to me this tastes like American Chew)

While some of these have notes of extra flavoring added to them................don't let that throw you................each one has a good rich tobacco base that comes through (with the exception of Prima.......which is natural but very mild)

Nice list but I would delete the Probe and add Granit.
