    Gums getting sore

Hey guys, been snusing for 3 days now. Haven't had a cigarette since my first portion 8) . Anywho, starting to really love the taste now of my General Ekstra Sterk portions. But the insides of my upper lip are just completely sore. Especially my gums. I'm having to snus in my lower lip right now due to this. And when I take one out, my lip's wrinkled like crazy. Like your skin after you take an hour long bath or something.

Is all of this normal and my lips and gums just need time to get used to the snus? I love this stuff and love the fact it's keeping me away from cigs with no problem I would hate to hear that I'm having uncommon reactions to the stuff.

Yea, that's probably normal. I've been snusing for 3 years now, and my mouth will sometimes get a little tender. Try switching sides a little more often. I primarily use my left side, but sometimes switch to the right. Your lip will always look a bit "off". It may be more, or less wrinkled, but it won't look normal with snus.

ive been snusin for almost 5 weeks, and yeah, my gums still get a bit sore, specially considering that i don't really like to switch sides, although sometimes, if i have a mini portion i will switch. i prefer my snus on my left side (upper) and it seems to find its way to ths little pouch in there (LOL) but when i wake up in the morning i can definitely feel it. if you can switch it up do so. its not so bad anymore, but i can still feel it. i haven't really smoked either.

congrats on that its very exciting and its great when you have great folks like these to talk to about this, as it can at times irritate friends (who smoke or don't) my people all see me as crazy, some i haven't told (like at my office, my bosses would just think im' some dumb redneck biotch) my assistant knows, as she sees me more often and sometimes i even ask her "mandarin, menthol or original?" sometimes she humors me others, shes annoyed by me talking about it because since its such a new thing to me, as you can tell, i like to talk. welcome to smoke free days and smell good times.

That seems pretty normal. Your mouth just needs time to get used to the salt. Having a foreign object rubbing up against your gums and spilling tobacco juice in you mouth is not something that we are born ready for, but it usually gets that way after awhile. GES is also very rough, in my experience. I understand that you need the extra kick right now, but you might be able to assuage your mouth a little by switching it up with some normals every so often.

Any ideas if this will go away?

What snus brands are you using?

Also again I can't stress this enough- change locations each time you snus. You can still have your favorite spot/side but you still need to change it up a bit-- or so it seems
          Thunder Frosted Extra Sterk.

Next time I snus, I'll try changing the location
Thunder!!! man your snusing gunpowder. No wonder. I'm surprised your face hasn't fallen off

Do you have to have an extra stark?

You might try starting with an extra stark first snus of the day and then going to a regular strength portion for the next couple of times then back to a stark (maybe at lunch or early afternoon) then back to regulars till evening and so forth (changing locations each time).

I'd use extra starks only as much as I absolutely needed (e.g. to stave off cigarette cravings) But if that's not the issue I'd transition to regular strength ASAP. That is what is burning your gums.
          And this

          Best remedy:
          1. switch sides regularly,

          2. stay hydrated (on the rare occasion that I get salt irritation it is usually during cold or hey fever season when I am taking decongestants to dry me out),

          3. switch brands (I have a regular rotation- some cuts and some brands tend to irritate more than others with extended use- again this is texturing and not a chemical burn),

          4. brush with Arm and Hammer tooth paste (non gel if you can find it). It seems to work really well.

K, sometimes when I fall asleep with a snus in I'll get a bit of salt texturing. But this is NOTHING like the dip lip one gets from American dip. The salt texturing is from abrasion/pressure. Dip lip is a literal chemical burn. Think of it this way: we have all fallen asleep on a quilt, sofa, or the likes and woken up with imprints on our face. Now imagine you spilled acid on your skin. The effects are completely different. In my experience the analogy is exactly the same. With snus it is an imprint. With dip it is a chemical burn.
That said, my experience is with loose. I don't do portions enough to say one way or the other. However, just from reading the forum, it seems that some portion material is more abrasive and irritating than others. But again this would still be a friction/pressure matter and not a chemical one as it is with American dip.

          Hope this helps.

Give it a month or two, you'll have gums of freakin' steel. And like said above, switch sides more often - I never snus on the same side more than two portions/pris in a row.

Experimental Monkey, as other said, VERY normal for newbies. Shouldn't be any issue with it anymore by the time you hit about 6 weeks.

Not exactly common, but have read maybe 30 reports of such from relative newbies in my 3 years here. So yes, does happen, and more importantly, always seems to just fix itself over time.

For now, try switching up sides a bit more, moving the portion around in your mouth as you use it. But I promise, the soreness does seem to always g away eventually.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll just give it some more time. Right now I'm having to switch from top shelfing to lower decking daily to give my upper lip time to heal. My gums already seem to be getting tougher, however.

Got my second order in yesterday and the strongest stuff in that is Claq Qui (oh my how I like it... it would've probably been a mainstay in my rotation) and besides that a few 11 mg portions like Nick and Johnny. So maybe a break from the GES and Thunder will help also.

I'm not sure from your description but do you usually take a portion straight from the can and use it? I've been using snus for a couple of months now and I got the same irritation on my upper gums when I first started too. I've noticed that with some brands, the snus catcher lid seems to smash the portions when they're packaged so they're not the most comfortable straight out of the can as some of the others. I found that fluffing the portion just a little bit before using it made a big difference on the amount of irritation that it caused on my gums.

It took about two weeks for my gums to get used to the portions under my lip and now it rarely ever bothers me. Pretty soon, you'll be wrinkle free and good to go.

                    Hi

at the moment i know exactly how you feel and was sitting there thinking if only i had paid more attention to my body when i first started smoking i would have run away screaming from it

i don’t know if you can get it over there but last night i found i reached for a tube of bonjela before i went to bed to calm my gums down its used for mouth ulcers the kind you get when you bite your cheek that sort of thing it’s basically a numbing gel certainly helped the situation

as for your lips just use a decent protective balm on them any amount of salt always does that to me even on crisps lol

but like most things im positive that its something the body will adjust to over time
