    first time snuser

    Hello All

Just thought i would introduce myself . I ordered some northerner
wintergreen snus online and just recieved it today, popped one in this morning
I have been trying to give up smoking with the aid of electric cigarettes and have made
a week so far without a smoke. I am getting on ok with the e-cig , but thought i'd give snus
a go to ; just to see which i get along with better. I also feel a bit sorry for my lungs
and cardio/pulmonary system in general , and thought the less i inhale the quicker my recovery will be.

I have to say , i'm not to sure about the snus so far . It's been in about an hour . It's quite overwhelming
i'm starting to feel a bit sick to , and have to keep spitting . The flavour is pretty foul as well .
Do you get used to snus ; develop a tolerance ? does the nausea subside and does anyone have any flavours
they recomend . I don't mean moan ; i'm glad i'm still not smoking , but i do feel really quite ill.
    thanks , Alex

I hear smokers like stronger snuses like thunder frosted and odens varieties. I prefer stonger ones but I never smoked.
If the taste is just too "tobacco" flavored for your liking you could always try a more sweet candy-like snus. Jakkobsen's melon is quite good as well as any of the more recent olde ving varieties (99"coffeee", fudge, and melon) I prefer jak's melon to olde ving but its all preference. My favorite all time snus has to be thunder frosted. If you dont like the taste of the wintergreen snuses you should probably stay away from any of the original varieties. Such as general original, ettan original, prima fint etc.

The taste can be quite strange at first. My first ever snus experience was with general original and ettan original. Both are "plain tobacco" flavored but general has bergamont (kind of a bitter citrus) and ettan might be plain tobacco flavored but it tastes far different than my previous enjoyment of copenhagen long cut straight. I got used to it. Now when I use american dip it tastes too sugary/sweet/almost makes me cough. Give it some time. I've never seen one person on here that switched from cigs to snus and regretted it.

Welcome Alex and hang in there. It can take a little time to adjust to the snus nicotine delivery curve....it is slow compared to inhaling smoke but the effects last longer and can be stronger. It seems most come around to the flavor(s).

          Alex,

          Welcome to the forum mate!

A couple of things: first, if you are feeling a bit of nausea it could be either too much nicotine...or more likely it is the wintergreen. I would not have started with a wintergreen snus (I would not have ended with one either).

Second, get a variety of regular strengths and a few starks (strong) and sample what is out there:

Try a few traditonals like Grov and Ettan.

Work in a few flavored brands (Gustavus, Phantom Blue, Goteborgs Rape).

Try a few Starks (General ES, Skruf, and Extreme).

Then add a few candy snuses (mint, melon, berry, coffee, fudge....what ever strikes your fancy).

That will give you a good idea of what is our there and will be a far FAR better indicator than anything wintergreen.

Snus is still less than cigeretts......so even if it turns out you don't like snus, the experiment is well worth a shot simply just for health reasons.

On more thing: give it a bit of time.....most folks new to snus talk about the saltiness of snus......that will pass in a week or so and you wont even notice it. Also coming from cigarettes it is not just your lungs that have taken a beating, your taste buds have as well. It will take about a month off of cigarettes for you to begin to be able to pick up the subtle flavorings of the more traditional (non candy) snuses...........therefore....don't throw anything away.....if you don't like it at first stick it back in the freezer and revisit it in a few months......your taste will change

Anyway, I hope this helps............keep us posted and let us know what you find

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies
i popped another one in a few hours later and it didn't taste so
still made me feel a bit nauseous .Snusdog ; i probably should have joined the forum
and asked about the flavours strengths etc before ordering .... hm. I presume then that wintergreen
is not a popular choice ; it sounded nice in the description. It tastes a little like dandelion and burdock
which i think you call root beer over in the states. It's strange because i really enjoy a cool glass of d and b
I think i may have just been overwhelmed by the nicotine as well , or something ; which i suppose is odd for a smoker
            - although i was a relatively light smoker-

              Give the snus a chance!

I thought of going the e-cig way as well, but I was also concerned about the long-term effects of using that and yes, I think it's greatly preferable to not inhale anything but air.

I think you could be experiencing the nausea from the nicotine. Snus is actually stronger than you would think at first. I used to smoke non-filtered, hand-rolled cigarettes but the first snus I had - a General White portion, standard strength - gave me a little head rush from the nicotine. You will get used to the nicotine levels. And you don't need to keep the snus in for an hour; take it out after 20 or 30 minutes before it gets overwhelming.

The flavor: I agree that wintergreen isn't the best place to start, unless you were coming from wintergreen dip or something. I don't know what snus is available where you live, but Snusdog pretty much covered it. For "traditional" flavors, in addition to Ettan and Grov, I would recommend trying General, Skruf, Tre Ankare, and Granit as well. It seems like everyone likes at least one of those. I honestly think Tre Ankare would be the least "weird" to a new snus user, but that's just my opinion.

The candy flavors, well. You already noticed this, but I found that one can't expect snus to be anything like food flavors. For example, I love berries, and berry foods, but every berry snus I've tried, I really disliked.

But the flavors will change on you, you'll acquire the taste for some of them, some you'll find are not so great as you first thought, and some of them will really grow on you. The only thing to do is experiment and give them a good try. That's part of the fun! Sure, you might waste some money on ones you don't like, but the way I look at it is: it's worth whatever it costs to get off (or in your case, stay off) cigarettes.

This is just my view here, but I think that snus needs a little time to really do its thing. Your body needs to get the idea that nicotine is coming from a new source now, and start to "get hooked" on that new source before snus really takes. After all, you didn't get hooked on smoking after your first few cigarettes, either. And it's not really something you can talk yourself into; you need to experience it. But once it does take, then the magic happens; you start to really get the flavors and the satisfaction from snus.

So, again, give it a chance!

All Wintergreen's are not the same IMO. I hate General Wintergreen but love Jak's Wintergreen!

I've made myself sick and drank a bunch of water go lie down for awhile. I am still not excited about the salt and it's been, what, 8 months? But flavors do become something you just want and so if it's well made stuff, quality, they grow on you. Nothing out there like them either. Cheaper than vaping unless you resist the overspending that seems to happen a lot looking for the next best thing and way less time consuming and way more convenient. I started out vaping and liking vaping a lot but if I had to choose I would choose an alternative to smoking tobacco product for the whole tobacco experience at a price i can afford And do it Stealthily without worrying if im 20 feet away from the door of some public place and all that crapola. I'd miss my vaping toys a lot! So glad I don't have to choose

Good to know. I could hardly stomach the General Spearmint but may try Jak's some time, variety is always nice.

Anything that makes me need to evacuate is a great thing to add to my life. The stomach pains and nausea aren't nice. You must not need very much. Everybody is different. And yes tobacco products will help you poop so that's normal.

It sounds like you're getting too much nicotine. I agree with Faylool, that you must not need much.

It's not really "normal", as I don't think most snus users went through bad nausea and pain, at least not those of us who already used tobacco.

Yeah, you would adjust to it eventually, but why go through that?

Id' say stop using the snus you have, before it turns you off snus completely. Stick with the e-cigs for now, and get some mini portion snus. Find some Mini Mints (regular mint, not wintergreen) or Mini Originals. General, Catch, Mocca, and Tre Ankare are all good brands that can be had in mini size, with lower nicotine strength (but make sure to get the lower strength ones, some minis are strong minis).

                              Faylool, Hi

yes evacuation is a good thing .... in moderation. I really haven't been using much at all
tried on portion in the morning ; then another later in the evening. Just popped one in
about 5 mins ago , and so far no stomach complaints , so maybe i am acclimatising
