    My Dental Visit Today

I have just returned from the dentist...and I was pretty nervous as I was worried that I would get a lecture about using snus, after having to explain to them what it was....and I hate long explanations. Firstly, there wasn't anything wrong with my gums or teeth and I have been using snus for a good few months now. Secondly, my dentist told me that he is half Swedish, and uses snus himself. My jaw kinda dropped and I was amazed. He asked me what I used, and I pulled out my tin of Goteborg Rape No2 which he approved of 8) He asked if I used loose, and I said that I used loose also, but the portions were a bit easier for work. The only advice he gave me about snus was to swap sides and positions now and again....apart from that, no lectures, no tellings-off....and I only need a scale and polish, so I am well pleased at this point

 sweet. Snus is actually good for your teeth - it's alkaline, and therefore assists in the absorption of minerals into your teeth.

Indeed....I seem to remember that its acid produced by bacteria that leads to tooth decay. It makes sense that some alkalinity from snus would help to neutralise the acidity

I had to ask myself though....of all the dentists in my area of the UK...I was lucky enough to pick one who was half Swedish and a snus user

I wish I could find a dentist in the UK that sympathised with my Snus habit. My dentist put the fear of god into me the last time I visted about tobacco use and oral health

Next time just bring that issue of The Lancet with you and hand it to him. No professional doctor of any sort would dare question The Lancet

I just had a dentist appointment as well. Nothing at all wrong, just the routine cleaning. They said my gums looked healthier than they did last time. Go figure.

I think us snus users must book our dental appointments on the same day or something.
I went today with my daughter.
I need 3 maybe 2 fillings (crap teeth and poor brushing in my younger years)
I had a new guy this time (chinese fella), the last dentist I had at this practice, turned me onto snus...honestly!!!!!!
Anyway, my oriental freind finished digging about in my gob, so, I thought I'd ask hime how my gums are
I asked "any gingival whatyoumaycallit going on?" No he said, looking a bit puzzled, I said I used oral tobacco and expect a bit of damage, whats you advice, I said. He said, it depends what other shit is in the tobacco, I told him it is Swedish snus, he said "Oh yeh, some of my mates in Sweden use that, no problems with that just don't over agitate (spelling) it and just leave it in place stationary and take it out now and again!!
                  I like him 8)

This is odd. With noone else seeming to have developed gingival pockets after snus use for a couple of years I'm starting to wonder whether it's something about me? I know one of the medications I take causes dry mouth. Could this be the problem maybe? I'm was Googling last night and read that dry mouth can make your more prone to gum infection and tooth decay (although it only seems to be my gums that are affected) My oral hygeine is good (brush/floss/mouthwash twice a day), I alternate where I place my snus and take a vitamin c supplement so not sure what's going on really ?

I thought my gum line above my incisers (front teeth) looking a little raw, dentist said no they are fine :? :? :? :?

I wonder if my dentist was just trying to scare me as she saw the tobacco stains between my teeth? That would be outrageous to do though. Maybe it's worth me getting a second opinion.

Oh! he did ask me if I floss my teeth, I should have said I only brush them 'cause I buy toothpaste for the kids
I think a lot is determined by your make-up....my teeth aren't very good, I think I'd have a head full of fillings even if I injected my food, somehow my gumms are ok, even after 24 years of smoking...I hope the rest of me is ok though.

Different effects on different people is a good point. I hate to say I snus more than I used to smoke. With snus being so accessible I do sometimes tend to have one on the go pretty much all the time whereas having to go and stand outside used to limit my appetitte for cigarettes. I think if I ever did go back to cigarettes now though I would have to move outside
