Using Snus to quit smoking, bleeding throat

As a new years resolution, I quit smoking at 38 after 24 years. Mainly for health reasons and a preganant wife. I am still healthy and I want to try to keep it that way. I have tried to quit many times. Cold Turkey, the patch, gum, you name it. The Army couldn't even get me to quit. I used the new American Camel Snus as as an alternative to nicotine this time and it has been very easy. After 9 days I am not craving cigarrettes at all. I really think I am going to do it this time.
I just have one worry. I am only using 6-10 portions a day. The last 3 or 4 days, soon after waking up, I am spitting up some bright red blood. not for a very long period of time, but enough to cause concern. I am convinced it is due to the Snus irritating my throat. Anyone had this problem? Any suggestions on a different method of use? I really do not want to give it up. It is so much better than spitting tobacco, which I grew up with, but my wife can't stand. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Joe

Its hard telling what they are adding to the American Snus. Go to a doctor. Spitting up blood is never something to be glossed over. Snus shouldn't cause any kind of bleeding though I haven't tried the Camel Snus.

Snus should not be affecting your throat to cause any blood. Are you swallowing the snus and/or its juice? Normally that is not the way one snuses. And even that should not be causing bleeding. If I were you I would go to the doctor and make sure it is nothing serious.

The bleeding must not have anything to do with snus. Even American snus can't be that bad, I think. It's more likely, that your throat reacts to the lack of some of the added chemicals in cigarettes. I, for example, had some terrible lung-aches after(!) I quit smoking. I guess this was due to the missing pain-killing substances, which are added to cigarettes.

But overall, I have no real idea, what happened in your case. You really should visit a doctor to find the reason.

Oh, and do yourself the favor to try Swedish snus anyway.

        Cheers!

It's normal to cough up some crud after you quit, due to the fact that your lungs will begin to heal and get rid of some of that built-up crap. However, if you are seeing blood, I agree that you really should get checked out.

          Congrats on quitting! 8)

            Snus users do not spit.

That sound almost like a rule, or maybe more like the legendary line from Apocalypse Now - "Charlie don't surf!".
I spit whenever I'm outside but have no problem with swallowing since it really doesn't matter what way you loose the extra juice. You're right that snus doesn't make you necesarily spit but I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with spitting the juice.

Bleeding throat is not something I've ever heard of being caused by snus - I would certainly get it looked at!

I agree that it very well may have more to do with having been a smoker than snusing. Camel, though......? I also agree you should try the authentic stuff from Sweden. They know a few things about snus over there!

Huh, well man... I must agree with everyone else's comments here that coughing up blood is definitely not a good sign and probably indicates some damage with your lungs/esophagus more than anything else.

However, I started snusing with Camel snus also, when they brought it to Raleigh (test area).

One thing I did notice, which I don't with the swedish snus at all... is 'anomalies' at the back of my throat. Strange red patches and dots and all sorts of crazy stuff... scared me enough that I didn't use the Camel again after getting back to Europe (wasn't an option anyway). Having said all this, it could be those super tasty Camel Blend cigs that I was smoking over in the good ol' US also.... mmmm

Hope this clears up for you buddy! Don't let it put you off.... just try and get yourself some genuine snus and you'll be alright I'm sure. I can recommend Onyx if you've been using the Camels. I took this route and it was a perfect transition since the Onyx is about as far away from the Camel snus as you can get... it was like I'd spent my life drinking schlitz and just discovered budweiser.

                    Peace!

                      Not camel

I started with camel too...used a bunch of it....no blood dude....you really need to go to a doctor. Also camel is really really mild compared to swedish snus. Now I've had some irritated taste buds from snus...but thats it.

I used the Camel product for a couple of weeks and although I didn't get any throat issues I did have some problems. It would severely burn the inside of my lip and my gums, especially the spice crap. I would then slough off gobs of dead skin from inside my mouth. As they are made in the U.S. now there's no way to find out what ingredients they are using. Actually I am a fan of the candy; 'Atomic Fire Balls' and they do the same thing to the inside of my mouth. Maybe cinnamon oil is the culprit in my case, although I would get the problem with the regular flavored Camel Snus albeit not as bad.

I know when I used the American/Camel snus it was really sweet. It messed up my bowel movements something wicked. Swedish snus changes my bowel movements a little but nothing bad. I will never again use the American crap unless it gets better. The Swedes just need to bring GOOD snus into the American view and things will turn out better!

I'm with everyone on this - get yourself checked.

But, I did have some gum soreness and bleeding when I first started snusing (I was a 30year smoker), I quit about 3 months ago, and I'm still coughing up crap, no blood tho.

Good luck on the quitting - keep with it, it's worth it!
