Using snus as NRT

I love both of your posts! Everything you guys said hits the nail squarely on the head.

I was just joking at work yesterday about the fact that I had the most productive week I have had in 2 years, and it was because of snusing. As a 2 pack a day smoker for 26 years, everyday at work I spent my time craving a cig, unable to easily run out and have one. This made me irritable and wanting to get out of work as quickly as possible. Now I just pop in a portion and move on with the day, and am a much more pleasant person to be around.

I used the coffee analogy yesterday with my boss when he said he didn't understand why it would make a difference. I said, "Imagine you are addicted to coffee, and you were not allowed to drink it at work, how would your day go?" He said, "I don't have to imagine, I AM addicted to coffee." Caffeine is a drug, but somehow non-smoking javaholics don't see themselves as victims of addiction until you analogize them.


Patti, welcome! As a smoker/ex-smoker, we are slaves to nicotine whether we smoke or not. I have a friend that quit and after 10 years she is thinking of starting snus. I said to her, "But you have done so good" and she said, "Listen, I only quit because hubby couldn't stand the smell, but I want a cigarette constantly even now, now I could get my nicotine and everyone is happy." Can't argue with that logic.

My old man used to be a heavy smoker doing both cigarettes and pipes, then he made the switch to snus without looking back. After a decade or so he wanted to kick using nicotine altogether so he started chewing Juicy Fruits instead until he managed to kick that too and replaced it with the occasional mint-flavored toothpick. He never smoked again but I could always tempt him with a pouch of General whenever I was holding though.

Still off the Cigs!

Snus is working, but I cannot do anything but portion snus..it is amazing how many other snusers will come over to visit you and offer you some of theirs when they find out you are a newbie snuser, lol...
So far, I have had white Sterck, and General, and I like portions, but do fine with the "candy' snus by Camel, and like the one called Mellow the best. It isn't as sweet as Frost. The Sterck white is good, but really, really strong...I am gonna get some more of that, anyway. Snusing is like being in a candy store, in some ways, so many kinds. I really do appreciate all the help and kind replies I have gotten here, and I think I am gonna deviate a little from the original plan: I LOVE Snus! I am gonna try 'em all , eventually, and have some samples on order now. I wish I had known all of this about snusing years ago, and that so many great people were snusers.. I would have stopped smoking a long time ago! Thank you all so much!

Just wait till you discover nasal snuff, hehe Talk about way too many to ever try out in one lifetime!

Yes, there's almost as many snus' out there to try too, so enjoy checking them out. Just remember that because you one day don't like a particular one, put it in the freezer and try it again another day. Surprisingly, some I wasn't crazy about at first turned out to be ok later on. Plus there's the snus exchange in here if you decide you really don't like something and would rather have something else.

Think, of course ONE cigarette is a mistake if you have had NO nicotine for whatever amount of time it has been. But you are in a completely different situation. The ONLY real pull a cigarette had was the nicotine dependence, you don't need it's nicotine any more. So other than the "experience", cigarettes don't have much pull now that you have broken the nicotine pull with cigarettes.

You might be disgusted, you might kinda like it. But what you won't be compelled to do is suddenly start smoking.


Having said that, I have bought packs and smoked them all in a day and a half. I can get on a roll if I start, not because I have any need, but the *habit* part is always lurking.

I then laugh at myself and don't buy a pack for another 3 months.
