    Fertility and Nicotine

There are articles on the net that suggest that nicotine is harmful to human fertility. However, see this http://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/cgi...tract/12/4/727
for a view that the harmful effects of smoking on fertility are not from nicotine.

Aye, I think it's been such a long connection between cigarettes and tobacco, smoking and nicotine, that it is almost a conscious bit of work to dissociate the two. For so many years we have heard, because of smoking and cigarettes, that tobacco and nicotine are evil and dangerous things. Really, the dangerous and evil thing is the burning of these ingredients and the inhalation of the smoke and soot, not the active ingredients themselves. Nicotine is just an alkaloid, like caffeine - certainly it has some effects on the human body, but most of the worst of it is, as you note, because of the smoking and not because of the nicotine.

I would like to refresh the tread just to ask, if you guys know any works / articles about the relation between the snusing and fertility (spermatozoa viability, mutagenic effects etc)?

      Regards

I haven't read much on the topic, but PubMed is always a good place to look.

Like google for medical science. 8)

Well, this is the epitome of useless, nonscientific information on fertility and nicotine, but the minute I started using snus, my wife became pregnant for the first time. Due November. He he.

Infertility?? Sounds like yet another good reason to snus. I'm done having kids.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I am not, so it's not funny for me.

My wife had a miscarriage, so the pregnancy that I talked about never went down. I can't describe how bummed I am. But, I guess in the great scheme of things, alot of people are going through worse things.

I have to drop off a sample of my swimming little dead rabbits tomorrow for analysis. I’m sure you all wanted to know that info.

It’s been about three years of trying, and only one pregnancy which resulted in a miscarriage.

Sorry to hear that DR, thats tough. 3 years is an awful long time to wait. I hope persistance yields the results you're looking for. I've had several friends that tried for over 5 years and eventually did get some little ones so don't give up yet! I wish you the best of luck.

I've (unfortunately) been hostage to the nicotine demon for a long time and I did manage to have 2 kids myself without any problems. I suspect nicotine does have an adverse affect on reproduction. However, if you're a slave to vitamin N like me then I'm not sure it's worth changing habits (no proof, I'm not a doctor), but if someone is at all concerned about it I would stop. I guess my thinking is, even if science hasn't provided a definitive answer (which I'd bet it hasn't) if it worries you, your kids are worth it.

Personally, I don't think nicotine has much effect on your virility (my own experience only) but if I was worried about it I would have given up vitamin N in a heartbeat (you give up a lot more when you have kids anyway - I don't mean to sound negative, but your life does change a lot and it's for the better).
