Hold on... so the FDA can regulate certain additives and advertising campaigns, but not ban it, right?

No powers to ban the stuff? That I can deal with.

However, and this is a big however... I DO NOT like the idea of the government getting seriously involved in regulating what we consume. Start with approving certain items, then it's more items, then the product itself. And once you let them regulate these things, good luck getting them to stop if they start going too far. Precedent has already been set, and there's little hope of turning back.

Seriously, man. Lay the **** off, let people decide on their own and take the responsibility that comes with making choices. **** this nanny state bullshit.

I don't know. Sweden heavily regulates how snus is made and we all seem to like those results. I find it reassuring that Sweden makes snus makers make their snus to meet food standards. i'm thinking if snus was made in a countrywith no regulations, I wouldn't use it.

No, they can't ban it, but they can make nicotine in tobacco illigal.

Some question if it can pass the Senate. A similar bill passed the house last year but was never acted on in the Senate. Senator barr, from my state, has threatened to fillibuster it. He has also introduced a competing bill that would encourage the introduction of less damaging tobacco.

BTW, Philip Morris supports the legislation, the only cigarette company to do so.

I heard today that they would reduce the nicotine in cigarettes. How would smokers react to that? They'll probably just smoke more cigarettes, won't they? And, more taxes would be collected. Wait until they get their hands on this imported tobacco from Sweden.

I'm all for the listing of ingredients, that's way over due.
But from there, let people read the ingredients and then decide for themselves.

                I agree!

We will have to see what happens in the Senate.

Is there any kind of petition or action we as concerned citizens can take to voice our views?

And here's another article on it from CNN.com:

"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that would give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate the advertising and sale of tobacco products in the United States.

The measure passed by a vote of 298-112. Only eight Democrats voted against the bill; a majority of Republicans opposed it.

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which now moves to the Senate for further consideration, would allow the FDA to restrict the marketing of tobacco and ban candy-flavored cigarettes.

It would also allow the agency to regulate nicotine and other ingredient levels, as well as force greater disclosure of the contents of tobacco products.

Among other things, it would give the FDA the authority to require the posting of larger warning labels on cigarette cartons and other tobacco products. Tobacco companies could be barred from running ads implying, critics say, that "mild" or "low-tar" cigarettes are less harmful.

"This legislation is a major victory for those of us who prize the health of this nation over the profits of tobacco companies," J. Randall Curtis, the incoming head of the American Thoracic Society, said in a written statement.

"We applaud the House for passing the bill and hope that the Senate will move it through quickly so that President Obama can sign it into law as he has already indicated he would. Swift action could prevent tens of thousands of future deaths."

North Carolina Sens. Richard Burr and Kay Hagan have introduced separate legislation in the Senate that would create a new agency to oversee the tobacco industry. Critics say such an agency would do a less effective job regulating tobacco products.

"It's a legal product," Hagan said in a recent interview with the Charlotte Observer. "I don't want to do anything that would harm the industry in North Carolina."
According to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, the state is the biggest tobacco producer in the nation."

I see no good coming from this. Just another example of this over-bloated government butting into yet another aspect of people's private lives.

This and the new SCHIP tax are the two main reasons that I have 80 tobacco plants germinating as I type this. Tobacco has a dark future in America, and I intend to get off the grid as soon as humanly possible.

80 plants will yield me about 20 lbs. of tobacco when all is said and done with the drying and curing. Most of this will be cut for cigarettes, but I also plan on trying my hand at snus making. Maybe even roll a few cigars, grind some snuff and mix up a nice shisha or two!

Call me paranoid, but I can foresee the day that I will be really glad that I know how to efficiently grow and process this shit.

Our government needs an enema, and they can stick it directly in DC.

There are some good snus recipes out there. I haven't yet tried them, but I intend to make some at some point.

I agree, the government is too involved with our private lives.
