    gum recession?

after using snus in earnest for about 6 weeks, I checked out my gums and am sure that my gums have receded on each of my incisors(I rotate), and possibly some other teeth. I bottom lip just as often, but those gums look fine.

It's proven that snus recedes gums, so I'm curious what your experiences are with that. If they just recede a certain amount and then stop, I'm not too worried, but otherwise I am because this is an irreversible thing.

P.S. brush 3 times a day, and eat candy. cut the candy today(and soda)

I use portions, and was wondering if this has something to do with the portion itself. I know there are "softer" feeling portions, so I'll try to seek some out, and only bottom lip from now on

kind of freaked out. trying to get a job w/ dental insurance

also, am going to get some nasal snuff to cut back on my usage(or eliminate it if I like it that much, but that's doubtful)

ok, I've been looking into this more and I've possibly been over-agressively brushing... I started "upping the game" so to speak when I started using about 8 portions a day. I'll see if brushing a bit less around the gum line helps

thoughts still appreciated cause I'm not sure that's why.

Cannot say I have noticed any gum recession. I've been snusing for over a year and only had gum problems (sore spots) in the first month of snusing. I use about 6-8 a day and maybe as much as 15-20 in a day if I'm tying one on .

I'm going to the dentist in a week so I will see what he says. I'll update then.

My dentist told me that brushing too hard will cause gum recession, so brush in a gentle, circular motion around each tooth with a soft bristled tooth brush for now on; that should help quite a bit.

I haven't actually noticed that much gum recession if any. Honestly though, right now I've been putting my portions smack dab in front smashed up against that little thing on the inside of your top lip. It messed up my los pris and I want it gone, so I'm TRYING to make it recede so it won't be in the way, LOL.

ok, I'm almost certain that it's from overzealous brushing now... I don't think I have too much to worry about but will still take all the steps I said.

              thanks for input

I have had trouble with recessed gums most of my life. I could look at my gums cross-eyed and the dentist would notice on my next visit ... it's been very hard work getting it under control. The following work for me:

                1. Sonicare toothbrush
                2. brush with regular brush when I get home from work
                3. At work, chew gum for a little after each portion and lunch.

I was surprised, when after starting to snus 4 months ago ( I was a non-tobacco before that), I went to the dentist and he said things actually looked better!!

Just gotta add my "yes" to the poster's question. I'm shocked at how much my gums have receded in the two years I've been snusing. I need some dental work soon, and I doubt that I'll return to snus after it's done.

Been using 2 years, NO gum issues whatsoever.

I vote with the brushing hard, that most definitely can cause that problem

Ok.... went and saw my dentist a week ago. He said nothing about gum recession. I know that if he suspected anything he would say something. I think TropicalBob has me a little freaked out though. I keep looking in the mirror everyday and wondering if I'm doing irreversible damage. Going to pay close attention over the next few months to see if anything changes. Also going to stop squeezing portion and flipping portions for more flavor, it can't hurt. I also ordered some Stonewall (tobacco mints) to give my gum's a bit of a break. AHHHHHHH

I would think that if snus were a primary contributor to gum loss, or any other disorder, that the facts would be very easy to find, especially in Sweden and Norway. Many, many people there have snused their whole lives.

My gums were already slightly recessed before I started snusing, so it's hard to tell if that's increased at all with use.

Alot of people who freak out about their gums DIG IN THERE with the tooth brush. Just use Listerene (sp?) twice a day (Along with brushing lol) and you'll be fine.

I went into the Dentists a week ago for my check-up what ever, and he noticed the can in my shirt pocket, and he was surprised, he said "You use tobacco?!" I replied with "yes". He said "You don't show any gum or tooth problems."

So I wouldn't bother your self with it. If you stare at the mirror your just tricking yourself that they are vanishing in front of your eyes.

Same here....smoking heavily also did a number on my teeth. I haven't smoked a cigarette in almost six months, and I'm just now seeing a slight difference.
