I feel your pain frosted. I'm a big meat lover. I have cut don't the beef quite a lot though. It just seems hard for my body to digest it. I eat a lot of chicken and seafood. Lately I've been really into variety meats and salami. Olive loaf, mortadella, prosciutto, coppa, salami, salami, salami. There's an italian deli in town that has some awesome stuff. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMeat!

Let's face it - if you were a hunter-gatherer with the prime task of finding enough to eat and look after your family every day, in most circumstances eating nuts, fruit and vegetation that you could find is by far and away the most likely way you would be getting your nutrition. Catching meat expends a lot of calories without modern technology and takes a long time, fishing - maybe less so - but still browsing the local trees and plants then moving on is what was the staple diet of homo sapiens for the first 100,000 years of our history. Meat was caught when it was plentiful - and it was made use of because we thankfully have the capability to consume meat due to our ancient human ancestry. This makes us a very versatile animal as we can eat all sorts if push comes to shove.
So - it's entirely likely that eating a mainly or exclusively vegetarian diet is more healthy to us. But the animal urges to consume cheaply obtained protein is ingrained in us to chow down on steaks and roast chickens (£3 whole chickens anyone?) - if we had to go out and hunt them every day it's unlikely that we'd be quite so impulsive.
As for life expectancy - the pre-modern world hunter-gatherer human could expect an average of 30-35 before passing away. It's both a blessing and a curse that we as a species often outlive this figure 3 times over - cancer being one of the curses. I'd suggest just being happy that we live in a time of unprecedented longevity and comfort! Put aside getting wound up whether some people have come to the conclusion that the food you love might be the thing that kills you and make your own choices.

Oh absolutely, it is a fact that the healthiest diet is one rich in veggies, fruits, nuts etc, with a little bit of meat sprinkled in between. That is what most humans ate for the vast majority of our history. You are so completely right in that it is engrained in us to eat meat when it's available though. Places like the rainforest etc are hard to find protein in, animals have adapted to be hard to kill, even catching a wild boar was a difficult and dangerous task for a very long time. Humans wanted meat, it tastes good and builds your muscles, but it was hard to get on a consistent basis. So when it is there than you eat meat, but naturally nature would only allow that on occasion for humans.
So yah, eating meat all the time isn't the most healthy thing by a long shot, I certainly am not claiming otherwise. However, to me anyways, denying meat all together goes against my very nature as a human. Of course I take it to excess though, ideally one would eat mainly roughage and greens and have a little meat with it or eat meat only occasionally, that is optimal for our bodies, but the mind tells me to eat that meat baby! And this being America and all, I oblige.

Ohhh nooo, carcinogennss....pff, these days opening your front door and picking up the newspaper could cause cancer, this is ridiculous. I am in the business of Beef Cattle ranching, and avoiding red meat 100% in place of vegetables and fruit is absolutely unnecessary, but hey, if that's what floats your boat, to each their own...but this seems to be another case of spouting off drastic, overly-exaggerated statistics and skewed descriptions of red meat. I eat beef regularly, and I'm not dying, overweight or unhealthy even a little bit...However I also eat equal amounts of vegetables and fruits (uh-oh, pesticides!!), and nuts (oh no! but what about all the fat in nuts?!)..anyways you see where I'm going with this, every kind of food has a case for it and against it, but red meat always gets all the BS unfortunately. Same goes with coffee; one month the news reports it helps with health, the next month it causes cancer or strokes...do your own homework and research about all this and make an educated decision at the very least, don't let idiotic media like this make your decisions for you (this also goes for the overblown High Fructose Corn Syrup dilemme--good god people, it's the same thing!). Balance your diet with a little of everything and you'll have nothing to worry about.

I have a couple of examples in my family that got cancer and they did not drink, smoke, take drugs and they also ate healthy their entire life. I've read a book recently that explained in detail how stress, sedentary life in general can damage the body slowly and eventually turn in cancer and other diseases. A positive attitude can DECREASE the chances to get cancer -

The major problem in this country is that good ole' manual labor and hard work has lost it's value...no one wants to lift a finger to do anything anymore...
Talking out of my own experience - staying in front of a computer 12 hours a day is pure hell compared to ... gardening for example (which in fact is a pleasurable activity)
Humans are not constructed to stay in front of a machine 12h/day that's why all sorts of diseases arise - leave out the ergonomics crap - you can have the best laptop/desktop in the world, the most expensive ergonomic chair and desk ......... and adopt the correct position - still it's a sedentary life.... the body purely doesn't do what it's been designed to do "MOVE" - and oxygenate every single cell in the body for a proper functioning-
Sedentary life is a killer - period.
heck the technology from some points of view is starting to affect our health dramatically -
people no longer wash cars - there's automated machines for it
people not longer wash dishes - there's automated machines for it
people no longer wash clothes - there's automated machines for it
people no longer walk - there's cars
people no longer socialize - there's facebook, oh yeah and ****book (they do it virtually now)

I believe there's even more pressure on the spine compared to the sitting position
Whatever I try I can never adopt a correct position at my desk due to my spondylosis -
I considered laboring work lol instead of the computer for many months now but I'm still thinking about it ...

Well I didn't mean that we have to go and work yourself to the point of injury and such, but things like taking stairs vs. escalator/elevator, or just taking a walk/hike in general...making your own meals instead of a heat-up dinner or fast food (you'll find it's much more rewarding and delicious), mowing your own lawn and doing outside chores instead of hiring others to do it. And for the people who do work behind computers, standing stations are great, but even exercising before, after and during work if possible is ideal...I personally go nuts if I am not keeping active throughout the day, and I've always been like that, ever since I was little...it was always playing outside instead of glued to the TV or video games, which I think have their time and place to an extent but in general are ruining youth (along with Facebook now especially). Our obesity problem in our country didn't pop out of nowhere...like someone else mentioned, look at other countries' eating habits and day-to-day lifestyles and then ours...there's no reason for obesity.
Well we certainly got off topic here...GO MEAT! hahaha
