    From Science Daily:
Nicotine Lessens Symptoms Of Depression In Nonsmokers
Why only in nonsmokers? Is Science Daily kind of yellow press for scientific topics?

    Cheers!

Interestingly enough (and slightly off topic), there is a strong corrolation between schizophrenics and cigarette smoking (i work for a mental health provider).

You're right about that. More than 60% of schizophrenics, if I remember correctly, smoke. Much higher than the general population.

Chainsnuser: If you look to the right of the article in Science Daily, you'll see links to a number of studies on nicotine. There are at least three listed there that link smoking (nicotine in our case) to increased depression in regular users.

I spend hours reading Science Daily reports. It pulls in just about everything of interest to us and our chosen lifestyle.

TropicalBob, I'm sure that you're right about Science Daily, yet the headline makes me think of 'science sacrificed to political correctness'.

            Cheers!

Gotcha now. You're right. PC headline. I had skipped right over it to read the story.

There may be a strong correlation between nicotine use and depression, but that would not necessarily mean that nicotine causes depression. It makes sense to me that people with depression will naturally look for things to lift their spirits, and nicotine is legal and could be great for that. Simply stated, the depression leads to the nicotine use.

You should be a doctor! And I think you're right. I've been a lifelong smoker, off 10 months now and on snus. When I was depressed, or bored, or angry, or exhausted, I'd ... light up. I never felt a craving to light up when I was suddenly elated by something that happened. I smoked mostly for negative emotions, because nicotine is both stimulating and relaxing. It made me feel better. Did it depress me? Hell no. I loved smoking. Love nicotine period.

We all need to keep in mind that even medical literature will accept almost anything that is anti-smoking, anti-tobacco, anti-nicotine. Most of those studies have Big Pharmaceutical financing behind them (those companies fund "charitable" and "health" groups to push an anti-tobacco agenda). The studies seek to legitimize foregone conclusions. The solution is to use nicotine-replacement therapy products. Voila! Follow the money .. again.

This all depresses me. I need a snus.

                      Here Here !

Personally, I run into problems with anxiety from time to time and tobacco is my medicine of choice. I believe in some cases it can be just as effective as the medications doctors can prescribe, yet it is devoid of some of the life changing side effects. Works for me !
