Are Lucky's Portions Really Toasted? And is that bad??????

I thought one of the reasons snus had less cancer causing stuff was that its not toasted. I enjoy Lucky's. But do you think it has more cancer stuff because its toasted? Or is that kind of just a gimmick?

Way back in 1917, Lucky Strike advertised, "It's Toasted!" as a marketing campaign for their cigarettes. I believe it came from the process of toasting burley tobacco to change its flavor profile. I know some pipe smokers that actually toast burley-heavy blends to improve the flavor.

However, I believe all snus manufacturers stay far away from burley tobacco, as it typically is high in TSNA's, nicotine, and who knows what else (Sure is tasty stuff, tho).

The whole "toasted flavor" of Lucky Strike snus has more to do with the flavorings they add, and they're trying to tie it into the cigarette brand. "It's Toasted!" just sounds better than "We sprayed it with a slightly oily, slightly lemony, hard to identify flavor!"

Don't get me wrong, I love LS snus.. it (and Ettan) are my daily brands, and nothing tastes better with coffee. But I'd bet money that (a) it isn't burley, and (2) it isn't toasted.

Is "burley" tobacco toasted tobacco or is it a strain of plant?

It's a strain of tobacco plant, and it's the predominant ingredient in most cigarettes and many pipe tobacco blends. For two reasons that you really wouldn't expect.

On the cigarette side, the biggest strength of burley is that it has very little flavor of its own (due to a low sugar content, if I remember right), but it absorbs flavors quite well. Since almost all modern cigarette flavors come from the actual flavor that is sprayed onto the tobacco, burley makes a great canvas for cigarette-flavor-goo. Yeah, I made that last word up.

On the pipe tobacco side, burley is appreciated because of it's neutral, almost nutty taste, although it's usually sweetened up quite a bit. But more importantly, it actually cools blends that it's added to. And as any pipe smoker knows, managing the temperature of the smoke is the hard part. Unlike cigarettes or cigars, you can burn the frickin skin off the roof of your mouth (or your tongue) in about ten seconds with certain tobacco blends if you don't smoke them very, very slowly... so cooling the smoke is a good thing.

Google for 'burley', and you'll find more than you'd care to know..

What ever happed to LSMFT (Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco) ? if it's not tosted, I would have stuck that on the can instead of It's Toasted. In any case I do love the flavor of Lucky Stricke snus, and realy love the can as well. The only other snus I have gotten in a metal can was the Taboco snus the Lucky can with the plastic insert seems to have a far better seal & keep longer.
