How is Swedish snus a healthier choice over American smokeless brands

Sorry folks...there's probably a thread on this somewhere but I did not find it. Post me the link if i've missed it. Or, if you could please provide a few words on why the Swedish product is a better choice health-wise over north american products; less carcinogens, additives, etc.? Is the Swedish product just better quality (taste and texture) with more selection........??

Much thanks from a total Newb!

    Cheerz.

I'll let someone else give the details. Long story short, it doesn't cause cancer because the ingredients used, as well as the process used to create snus (which is different than American dip), do not create the carcinogens that you find in American dip.

There's a giant load of info about it around here, but i'll let someone else find the link to the right thread.

In addition, it tastes better, you don't have to spit ever, and it lasts longer (and is cheaper). Studies have shown that the risk of cancer in someone who snuses is almost the same as someone who does not use tobacco, so at the very minimum it is a significant step in risk reduction compared to american smokeless.

Basically it's very similar to American dip except for the process used to cure and produce the tobacco. This process alone makes it less carcinogenic. Although snus can be made with the same ingredients as american dip, it is usually made with slight variations to drop the level of carcinogens even more.

        Awesome man,

The fact that I don't have to worry about horkin' out huge black wads of spit is a huge bonus for snus vs. this Red Man stuff. I won't diss the Red Man too badly though.....it did get me off those horrible cigarettes! Thanks for responding sgreger1. Since you're packin' a "PHD in Snusology" I really appreciate your insight. That is not to say that I don't welcome others to respond.

        Cheers from Canada.

Yeah that's the main difference is snus is air cured and dip is fire cured and fermented. I'd say dip is harder on your gums than snus, I wouldn't bother buying dip in canada it's too expensive.

You're bang on there J........I'm payin $18 for a 40 gram bag of Red Man. Chewing about 3 bags a week. But alas, my nicotine addiction is a powerful one so saying " oh i just won't bother" isn't really an option at this point. Unless i switch back to those damn cigarettes.......and that just aint happenin'.

Due to the way snus is manufactured there is a major difference in the number of potential cancer causing chemicals which are referred to as TSNAs, Tobacco Specific Nitrosamines, compared to dip. The levels in snus are almost never greater than two or three and most are less than that. Dip bottoms out in the 25 region and goes up past 100 or so. Even considering that difference both have wildly fewer such substances than cigs which is essentially the whole point of what is called "harm reduction" in the world of smoking cessation methodology. Most find that dip, aside from the spitting issues, is much harder on the gums than snus so really snus wins out overall with negligible to zero adverse health consequences and by far a greater level of social acceptability.

In short snus wins by a mile in every category and is unquestionably the safest, not to mention extremely satisfying, way to cut down or quit smoking entirely without resorting to nicotine patches, sticks, orbs etc. and is more effective than E-cigs while being far cheaper than any method even with the current absurd shipping procedures required and the insane tax situation in some states.

Dip rots your mouth because it contains lots of added sugars. Snus is sugar-free and only has pH regulators and (sometimes) food grade flavor additives. The fermented tobacco in dip has higher levels of TSNAs.

The others have done a good job answering the question

Thus let me just add that you might want to check out the Dipper's Guide to Snus. A lot of folks have contributed a lot of good info for those coming to snus for the first time. You might find it helpful

Snus is lacking the fiberglass that dip has in it. Fiberglass can be very harmfull if ingested. But if you have a boat it can be essential. Whatever floats your boat.

Fiberglass literally floats my boat. And keeps the house cozy. As for use down in my guts......ya, not-so-much. Bring on the snus baby!
