Just don't worry about how long it takes. Just alternate a cig then a portion until you feel comfortable with only the snus.

If you only smoke 5 a day, you can cut that to 3 tomorrow if you use a portion in place of number 2 and 3.

Just take your time and let the snus win.

And you're not alone completely. You've got all us here to encourage you.

Keep in mind, cigarettes deliver nicotine very differently compared to smokeless tobacco products. While smoking a cigarette, blood nicotine levels increase sharply, but deplete in a short amount of time. Snus, on the other hand, delivers nicotine at a slower pace, but the nicotine stays in the body for a longer amount of time. My advice: try strong portions. General Ekstra Sterk, in my opinion, hits harder than any other snus, since it has a high pH level (8.8), which facilitates nicotine absorption.

This chart compares the absorption of nicotine from a cigarette and snus:

From my experience, switching from smoking to snus was effortless, and I smoked about 12 cigarettes per day on average. Try out some strong portion varieties and I guarantee it will be easier on you.

This is my second post- I posted earlier about how I am starting, and now had a few questions.

Im at most, a 5 a day cigarette smoker. I know theres plenty of people who are at 2 packs a day, and I am certain that the quitting process is way harder, regardless everytime i attempted to quit I had severe problems for several weeks, forcing me to start back up again.

Can anyone take a guess as to what I can expect this transitional period to be like? Length of time, physicalls, mentally, emotionally etc.? Its hard to forecast this process when I'm really alone on it.
        Welcome epeer2.

I was a 2 pack a day smoker for 26 years. I started using snus because I travel so much and I couldn't take the nic fits. Once most of the hotels went non-smoking too I decided to use snus on my trips. After my first week of using snus exclusively on my trip I found I couldn't stand the smell of cig smoke and almost choked when I tried to have my first cig when I got back. That alone was enough for to convince me and I dropped cigs and went exclusively snus. That was 17 months ago.

In the beginning I was using like 3-4 portions per day and I noticed after a couple weeks I started feeling a little down and my concentration was weak. I Googled it and it turned out those were some of the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. I also noticed during that time I was dreaming about smoking, on several occasions. I increased my snus to 6-8 and have felt great ever since.

I think in the last 17 months there have been 2 or 3 times where I almost had a cigarette just to be social but decided against it, I enjoy being smoke-free too much.

It might be kind of scary at first not knowing what to expect. Honestly, everyone is different so it's hard to say. For me the trick was making sure I was getting enough nicotine or my anxiety would get out of hand. It can be tricky as well because the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal are almost exactly the same as with nicotine poisoning. Just take your time and smoke when you want. Try different things and you'll find what works the best for you. Also a good tip is to put the snus in before you need it to curb that craving before it starts.

Is it wrong of me to combine in the meantime? Im getting more niccotine now-using one or two less cigs but still am having some cravings

You can combine them no problem. If you have decided to quit smoking but not quit nicotine then kill that craving with snus. For some reason it's a lot easier to cut back on snus later if need be than the whole quitting cigs thing.

Combining snus with cigarettes is not always the best choice.

I used to feel sick when I was smoking a pack a day and using 6 - 8 poritons of snus.

Now it varies from to another, on your tobacco tolerance.

Snus delivers nicotine more slowly than cigarettes, so try to preempt the cravings by not waiting until your gagging for a fix. If you keep a steady trickle of nicotine going into your system with snus you're less likely to crave a cigarette, and thus you'll find you're less likely to have a cigarette.

Don't worry about how much snus your using. Once you've quit cigarettes and are exclusively snussing you can start to reduce your snus intake (if you so desire!) because your body will be used to way the nicotine is delivered, and you'll know when to pop a portion to satisfy a craving.

Thank you for the replies. ive been reading around the site, and one of my big questions is this: Since i am a 5 a day smoker (or was a few days ago), and have been smoking for roughly 3 years, amd i going to go through the same 6 month+ process as many people here have? I know that itll be better than if I went through it all with no snus (obviously) but can I expect anxiety, depression, unclear thinking, weight gain, and a 6 month switching process? Or do you think it will be shorter/milder

if you only smoke 5 a day you shouldn't really feel any withdrawl , becuase you aren't taking in much nicotine at all , I will echo some of the above posters and say just stop smoking and don't even bother with the snus unless you really feel you need it .

I've heard people getting panic attacks quitting cold turkey from 3 - 4 cigarettes a day.

I've had panic attacks when I first quit cold turkey so yeah the withdrawal symptoms vary from one to another. (I was on 2 packs a day and only 19 years old)
