This was my rescue, Jerry. He had a very bad previous owner, and had a severe repiratory infection when I got him. I nursed him with oral antibiotics for 2 weeks, but sadly he was too far gone and passed.

And that was the only place to get feeder mice around here. But I still have a really nice 55 gallon set up, so hopefully I'll have a resident for it real soon!
Easy solution...don't feed them live mice, hehe. The snake can't get hurt that way either  As far as Jerry goes, that sucks. I had to actually give one of my snakes antibiotic shots for 3 weeks when she was sick. Talk about fun...especially to someone who hates needles *shudder* But, had to do it, so I put on my big girl panties, paid attention when the vet showed me how to do it, and made it through it. The snake survived too.

My Macklott's, Mya. She was beautiful, but feisty. I gave her away to a great home for the kids' sake.

Sorry guys, I know these ain't my mug, but I miss my babies!

I know it sounds sadistic, but that was half the fun! I was super careful and hand fed them. I dangled the mouse until it was taken from my hand. And I NEVER left a live mouse in the cage with the snake. In the future I will probably go frozen. If I'm not mistaken, I believe you can mail order them. Correct me if I'm wrong, and let me know the best way to get them. I love input from experienced snake people!

Might have to go private with this before we both get smacked, hehe But you do at least hold the mouse before giving it to the snake. They can end up with some nasty little bites if you just toss a live mouse in there with them. Oh yes, you can mail order the mice and get them shipped overnight on dry ice...I did that until I started buying them at the expos.

I had to google those Macklotts, looks like they can have a little attitude when you first open their cage  Never been bitten or even struck at by any of mine, not even the brazilian rainbow boa who bit the guy I bought her from twice...while I was standing right there. She just didn't like him I guess! :P

I'll PM the link for frozen mice.

Cool deal! I appreciate the info, and my wife thanks you for giving me the snake fever again!

The Macklotts can be a little ornery, but she never bit me! And once you got her out of the cage she loved to be held. They're nowhere near as aggressive as bloods or reticulateds!

You can tell a blood python's owner by the marks on their arms that look like needle tracks  And welcome Mrs Badfish! hehe

get yourself 2 female and one male mice and a 10 gallon tank and raise babies yourself for food. As far as the mice biting the snakes just take a pair of wire cutters and cut the fangs off. If you want to be mean then just pull them out. 8)

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I had a red tailed boa named Xavier that I used to feed live mice to...One time I put 2 little mice in there and he only ate one. The other mouse slept with him when he curled up and they used to chill together. I put another mouse in there and he ate the new mouse but refused to eat his friend.

Sadly, the love affair ended when the mouse died of old age. lol! That was seriously weird but kind of funny. I don't know what those two saw in eachother but it was an interesting love affair.

The picture on page 32 had me scrolling right to read the posts. I read one and thought "that has to be PP". Sure enough.

Nice! Good advice PP (I thought better of you). Personally, I can't blame the little rodent. If all I had were my teeth, I'd bite the shit out of anything trying to eat me alive.

Definitely not into snakes though a few friends were. Many years ago, I almost bought one but didn't. Years later, saw a show on TV (Nat Geo, or Discovery Ch. I think), where a guy raised this constrictor from a baby... it grew to about 10 to 12ft long... he went to feed it one day (a chicken I think), turned his back for a moment, and the snake... who must've gotten confused, hit on him... almost took his face off in the process of constricting him. His screams brought a nearby friend who fortunately cut the reptiles head off to save the guy. Yeah, they can be pretty to look at, and I guess to some folks, cool to handle - but reptiles have no heart, and as far as I'm concerned - to a big enough snake - we're just food. No thanks... JMO & No offense to you snake lovers and herpetologists. I know these creatures have their place in nature. I'll just stick with mammals & birds.

Good to see you post Rob. LOL don't get me wrong bud, that comment about cutting the fangs off the mice was to get a reaction. I personally think its would be a crule thing to do. I HAD a friend that had reptiles and he used to do that to the mice. No matter what I told him he continued to cut the fangs off. Asshole. Hes not a friend anymore. I understand that the critters have to eat but its bad enough he had to feed them live mice but to take it that step further was just seemed crule....to me anyway.
