Sizzler is a job American won't do

Authorities raid Sizzler restaurants in Phoenix

    Jun 12, 10:45 PM (ET)

PHOENIX (AP) - Sheriff's deputies raided two Sizzler steak house restaurants in Phoenix on Saturday, arresting nine employees who are suspected of being illegal immigrants and using fraudulent documents to get jobs.

The raids were part of a yearlong investigation into whether the operators of the two Sizzler locations broke a civil law by knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Lt. Brian Lee said in a statement.

Deputies were looking for 23 suspects wanted for identity theft, Lee said. Authorities believe one of the suspects was deported three times and has been hired back by Sizzler each time he returned.

The sheriff's office received a tip from a former Sizzler manager who claimed he had been fired for his refusal to hire employees without the proper documents, Lee said.

"This is another example of a case where desperately needed jobs are being occupied by illegal aliens who have disregarded our laws and our borders," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in the statement.

Arpaio, known for pushing the bounds for how local law enforcement agencies can confront illegal immigration, frequently raids workplaces in the greater Phoenix area for people in the U.S. illegally.
A message left at one of the two restaurants wasn't immediately returned Saturday afternoon. A manager at the other restaurant declined to provide his name and publicly comment on the raid.

I'm not a fan of Arpaio, I think he's a dick and don't like his stand on drug users, that being said I'd prefer he focus his energies on Illegals for sure.

He's an older American guy, he don't like illegal drugs, and he don't like illegal aliens. Probably most of our grandfathers are the same way.

They need to create a system that will database social security numbers better with the irs and if found to be fraudulent the employers would have to terminate immediately or face fines.

Did they not have something like this in mind pre-hiring? like a id-check? and our corrupt not offending Mexican but offending legal citizen politicians did not go for it?

I think they may want to displace Americans with illegals.

They have e-verify which works well. It's not hard (and really cheap) to verify employment, but most don't since there are no tough rules for it, they would rather pay less.

There is a system for this in place. I remember participating in the pilot program in 1998 or 1999 when managing a Chart House restaurant. I had to call in the SS number to verify it and all other info was correct. It was simple, took 3 minutes and caught 2 people in the 2 years I did it. I don't do it with my current employer, nor have I for the past 6 years or so, but I'm pretty sure it's available.

About Americans and these jobs. They won't do them because they don't HAVE to. Plain and simple. You, me, and the rest of us are payin' the dole for them. Is it better for society to have a system like this??? I say abso-freekin'-lutely not, but alas I'm not king of the world. Work ethic, pride, and productivity are at an all-time low in the workforce that I've encountered lately. It's terrible to think that people won't take a job that pays less than they get off the unemployment dole. I know people that do this and it is irritating. Stop the dole and Americans will take the jobs eventually. When I managed a restaurant I hired Mexicans because they were Mexican on several occasions. The work ethic was better, I had a good crew that I was able to work well with, and it was just plain easier (especially if you had to come down on someone).

I think the problem is too big already though. Let's just say that the mood of "everyone is entitled to an education" changes and we don't have more than one generation of 'chiefs and no Indians' and the unemployment dole is rolled back to say three months (currently it's now 18 months where I live). If now Americans were facing the reality that they have to take these jobs it would be so widespread that it would have to get the attention of the media. Now as a matter or pride I think you'd have more and more employers hiring Americans over other Nationalities for the wrong reasons. I believe that it will create a sort of racism, and crime would increase. I think the government knows this, but they can't seem to get things going enough with the economy and consumer confidence to make the problem go away again. We're starving ourselves with our lifestyle in these matters. We're importing workers because of the demands. I think simple economics are at play here and our illustrious leaders have been turning a blind eye for decades.

Something really has changed in society within a decade or two.
When I was in high school I worked in a donut shop (age 15-16). All the fast food, restaurant and gas station jobs were all taken by the local high school kids. We all worked for minimum wage and if you did not have a job that meant you were getting a allowance from wealthy parents. Close to everyone was working and especially summers.

Jobs basically suck, unless you have a career of something you love. But also, people won't work, if they don't need to. Be it living off their parents, girlfriend, or government check.

Trust me, Americans will work at sizzler if there were no illegals, it's not like no one would work at gas stations or sizzler fast food places. Kids need those jobs and to give them away to someone else isn't fair and it breeds the very same system WickedKitchen is talking about. The kids nowadays can't afford to move out at 18 and instead learn to leach off their parents or goto school and leach off the government for 5 years after they turn 18. We need these jobs available to our youth so they can learn work ethics and how the real world works from a young age.

Anyone telling me that Americans won't work at sizzler or subway are wrong on all accounts. It's what I did and it's what everyone should do. To be a good CEO you must first live life as an underling so your not an elitist, so you can relate and empathize with your employees. This cannot happen if all the underlings jobs are reserved for illegal aliens.

My best friend and his wife pay her(they've been married for like 9 years and have an almost 9 yr old and 3 year old) 20 year old son like $350 dollars a week to babysit and stuff. He had moved out for awhile and just moved back in. I Had them over yesterday for lunch and am amazed at the story that was told. This kid, from what I gather< thinks he owns the place. He's never bought his own car, she supplies that for him. He's never bought car insurance either. It wasn't said but I'm pretty sure mom was paying his rent when he was out of the house. I just couldn't keep from shaking my head... I mean this is what America has come to. I also have a 20 year old nephew and a 17 year old niece, neither of them work. The 20 yr old has worked sporadically, but by no means has he ever worked hard, the 17 year old has never worked but does nothing but bitch and complain about her parents, and My Bro-in-laws side of the family treats her like this is nothing to be ashamed of. I just don't get it. I got a paper route in the fifth grade(which ld to quite a successful lawn mowing business) continued to do that till I graduated high school, and when I was barely sixteen got a job at the local banquet hall did that for 2.5 yrs till I got a job as a porter at a car dealership. Continued to do that working 6 days a week while I went to night school 5 days a week and put in 20 hrs, not to mention the commute.... Jeesh, I really hope this nation has some people who are willing to work and find a way. I am just so disgusted by it alll.

We share a similar view here. I tried working when I was 14 but the laws in CA make it difficult for anyone unde 16 to work (near impossible). But I still went business to business looking for work. I eventually found it at 16 and by 17 I had decided my school was infested with gang members and crappy teachers and was no longer of any use to me. I dropped out of school, passed my GED and then worked full time untill I could buy my first car. I worked at subway, sold daily news newspapers door to door, and worked at night as a pizza delivery boy, but I got that damn car. after doing this I realized I could work further away, so I joined a temp agency, this imediately led to my income doubling, and eventually one of my temp jobs hired me on full time, which nearly doubled my income again. By the time I was 19, I was working full time, living in my own place with my own car and making $35k a year with nothing more than a GED and some elbow grease. From there I decided I wanted more so I joined the army hoping to deploy and get paid hella tax free cash and get free money for school (I could never afford school otherwise, my fam is poor). Did that, came back to work civilian side and am now making 40k a year, my next step is signing up for night classes at the local college this year and using my GI bill to get an education that will in theory eventually double my income again.

This is what seems normal to me, but so many of my friends are 25 and have still never held down a real job, live mainly off their parents or by selling drugs, and almost none of them have a college education. WTF, do people not want nice things? At 25 your odds of getting someone pregnant are pretty high, so I hope they change something quick because kids ain't cheap. I just don't get how people like my friends, or how people that live solely on wellfare are even satisfied in life?

I didn't have a happy home life, as soon as I turned 17, I joined the Navy because I wanted to get the heck out on my own.
