Memo posted at work regarding tobacco use.

So I noticed a couple pages on the bulletin board in the lunch room at work.

I rarely go in there. I generally go out for lunch with the IT boys or run home to take a dump on home base.

One memo is regarding cell phone use at the office. LMAO. I immediately walk down the hall with my phone out, several times a day, more so since seeing this.

Second memo is regarding tobacco use. No smoking in or around the building. In your car is ok. The list is short and well balanced. Restrictive, but reasonable. Then I see the last line. No tobacco consumption is permitted in the building. Chewing tobacco or oral snuff are specifically prohibited. Failure to follow these guidelines will lead to progressive corrective action up to and including termination. HAHHAAAA.

I use snus all day long. I do go out of my way to use my snus ash tray and dump it into a used lunch bag before pitching it. We have a cleaning lady who thinks she's going to save the world by dumping our garbage cans and not changing the trash bags. So I spare her the horror of coming into contact with my slimy used portions.

I utterly refuse to not consume tobacco on the job. Fire me. I'll coast on unemployment while I sharpen up my resume. I have two rolls in my mini fridge with bottled water and Coca Cola in my office. lol

Does anyone else have a tobacco policy at work? How strict is it? What are the rules and consequences?

I work from home. My wife does yell at me when I flick the used portions and they stick to the gun safe behind the trash can - does that count? So far it's just been yelling, but the hitting and biting can't be too far behind.

That is asinine. Tobacco use leads to increased productivity. Its science. Read a goddamn book.

I applaud your open violation of such an invasive and unnecessary policy.

Well, I work in retail and the STATE law is no smoking within 50 feet from the front doors. I do have some associates that smoke but even before the smoking ban, they went around the corner about 30 yards away from the door out of courtesy for our customers. I have a "No Dipping" policy just because of the spit cups and it's not too professional to talk to a customer about a computer with a big wad of tobacco in your bottom lip. ;-)

But my snus policy is this:
            1. Use Swedish snus all you like, just make sure the portions make it to the trash.
            2. Use Camel SNUS.............your FIRED!

I work from home, and various other locations, including bars (not lately). Once upon a time, I'd smoke in a bar; now that's rarely allowed, unless it's across the line in Alabama. Other locations I'd smoke outside; at home, I'd smoke wherever I damned well pleased. My walls are still yellow from years of it; I utterly ruined a couple of nice, white shirts that I'd hung on a door. You should see the plastic housing of my monitor and my older computer.

Now, with snus, I simply snus whenever I want, wherever I want. No one cares, and most ppl are probably glad I'm past the early, excited stage where I was telling everyone about it. They don't care, I don't care that they don't care, and all is well.

The question, though, was about tobacco policies at work. As something of a freelancer, I guess you could say I have various workplaces, but there is nothing too egregious. It isn't like some places, where if you inadvertently drive onto the grounds with a cigarette or a portion, a tobacco-sniffing flying robot alerts security and they haul you out of your vehicle and shoot you on the spot. I know I'm exaggerating, but not by much.

Lol @ this stupid rule. Next bulletin will read how going on internet forums during work hours is grounds for termination. Rofl.

Idiots. I can understand tobacco that leads to spitting but snus is like chewing gum (surprised they didn't post "NO GUM CHEWING OR YOU'RE TERMINATED ****ER"), totally harmless. Gotta keep the slaves in line as they're always up to no good, those rascals.

Most places frown upon "dipping" while on the job. One time my boss caught me putting in a portion and ordered me to spit it out. I did that, then put in another portion when he walked away.

That's nuts, I understand everywhere is non smoking, and I could understand no dip chew, if it impaired one with their hands/work, with the spitting. If my work said this, I'd just continue but be on the down low, which with snus, that should be easy.

I've a bit of success at work converting a few dippers/smokers to snus and have actually been thanked by management for the effort. Of course it's far from an office environment--a printing shop--and the plant boss his ownself dips but still in all a very favorable response. In the majority of situations however the biggest trouble with the pathetic ignorance of management regarding snus is that if you do attempt to educate them that instantly pegs you as a snuser and subject to harassment by said know-nothing boobs.

Yeah, you ought to read the dress code.

Someone in HR has WAY too much time on their hands. There must have been a problem with the interpretation of "business casual" on Fridays during the summer so they put out a laundry list. Two of them 'Allowed' and 'Not Permitted'. lol Most of it applies to women, but I saw; no muscle shirts, no flip flops, no cut off shorts above the back pockets,.. etc... It's good reading in the can.

Funny thing is when you attempt to specifically list what's not allowed, you actually really succeed in not listing more things. You can say no 'Blue shirts', some asshat will wear one and say it's 'Teal'. The possibilities are endless.

So using that line of reasoning, I can truthfully say, "I'm not chewing!"

One could argue that swedish snus is not chewing tobacco, or oral snuff.
