ProudMarineDad - I envy you, those have to be some great memories.
When i was around that age, maybe a little older i was riding my bike to the college ball field, maybe 5 minutes from my house, to watch their practices and games. Also around when i started going to the Omaha Royals games.
Glad to see a nice number of fans here. For me, there is just something about baseball. Bigblue1 seems to share my train of thought, the perfect game.
Let me preface this by saying that I don't want to get into a pity match with any pirates, oakland, et cetera fans, nor do I want to listen to any fake f*cking red sox/angels/yankees fans rag on my team because they don't know enough about baseball to develop any intelligent commentary...
I really hope this thread doesn't go down that road. I just wanted to start a nice casual baseball thread.
No worries man, i guess that came off wrong. I was actually agreeing with you kind of lol. I dont want there to be any bickering about teams or anything, just about enjoyment of the game. These kinds of threads can get heated/ off track quick.
Well I'm feeling pretty positive about this thread already, glad to see so many fans. That being said, any comment to keep the tread alive is welcome by me. We all have our moments. Like right now i want to scream at the top of my longs about the whitesox. I mean like 4th best era amongst starters and pretty good bullpen work for the most part and were 4 & 7 cellar dwelling. ahhh! I'll Just keep telling myself it's early........ but so far 2005 it aint.... best year of my life by the way.

Yes, I got to see Hammering Hank Aaron in person. Saw Pete Rose, Ernie Banks, and Willie Mays among others play. Some of my fondest childhood memories with my dad. I still like listening to a game on the radio. Something about baseball just gets to me.
I love listening to a game. There's something about it. Not sure if it is memories of my grandpa sitting in the basement drinking old style and listening to the cubs. Or if it's the visualization of the game that happens like nothing else that you listen too. Or the way that it seems to condense a commute like nothing else. But i love it, like it better than watching on the tube.
Yep, they were hot in 05. As a hardened royals fan, I am required to hate A.J. and crew with all of my body, but their is no denying that season.
Honestly, its good to see anyone from the central compete with the money guns out east. The twins look pretty B A this year, huh?
They always look good as of recently. That's one well built franchise. Oh an yes the Sox kicked all sorts of ass that year. like i said best year ever.
My undying love for the Cubs inspires my hatred for the White Sox. Some of my best friends and some of my family are Sox fans, so I won't hold it against anybody. 2005 was a very bad year for me.
Oh yeah, PMD- Kansas Cities own Joe Posnanski just wrote a book about the 1975 Reds called "The Machine". Its a very good read, if you are interested, and Joe Po is easily the best sportswriter working today.

You know I've always been part of this mentality. But i'll tell you what in 03 I wasn't hating. We had gone thru such a baseball drought here, that when the cubs were what 5-6 outs away from the series and no stopping in sight. I was actually happy for cubs fans. One of us needed to do something. Anyway i never saw that reciprocated in 05. All i heard from cubs fans going down the stretch in september when we were sucking like 13 losses was how we were gonna blow it. I let it slide cuz it was the regular season. But when we tore thru the playoffs, maybe one of the best showings in recent history by a pitching staff, i got nothing from my cubbie friends and family. And that's okay. but somewhere in my mind, I have to believe that my good will in 03 had some sort of karmic effect on the 05 Sox. Just something to think about......
I love baseball...I have since my earliest memories. I've always been a Red Sox fan. It was almost a religious event with my dad and grandfathers and they watched most games and would rearrange their schedules to be able to consume baseball.
I enjoy it on the radio too, almost moreso than the TV. Baseball is the reason I got into satellite radio. When I lived in NY there wasn't a hope in hell of Sox coverage so I listened almost exclusively on XM for years. There's just something about the radio...nostalgia, excellent commentary, convenience, or what have you. An interesting thing about XM is that during the season you always get the hometown feed. It's nice hearing the opposing teams announcers...also make you appreciate yours more. I've often wished that there wasn't a delay because I'd much prefer to watch the game and listen to the radio announcers than most of the guys on the TV.
I'm worried about the Sox this year though. On paper they've got a fantastic team but in reality we've got our problems. The bat's are still hibernating (other than Varitek...who would've guessed that one so far) when we need them. I'm all but convinced that Ortiz has been juicing up to the 2009 season (pouting) and I really hope that Wakefield keeps it together this year. He's been my favorite player for over a decade now.
I'm going to Fenway on Sunday! General Billy and I are probably in for a soaker this weekend but oh well...that's baseball. Besides, Grov, beer, and bar food will keep my smiling.
GO SOX!
Edit - I forgot to mention my favorite thing about baseball as of late. Night games. My wife works a few nights per week and at 7:00 my two girls and I get all comfy on the couch and watch the first few innings of a sox game before they go off to bed. Sitting arm in arm with your kids just chatting, teaching, watching is priceless. My favorite time of the day.
My wife is straight from Ireland...try explaining the game of baseball to a grown adult who has no idea about the rules of the game. Now that's a challenge.
