When did it start happening? Does your sound device show up in device manager? If so, and it shows drivers are installed, I'd boot to a live Linux CD, and see if you get sound then. If not, I'd suspect your sound device went up.

Sounds like you didn't get the right drivers, or the card's really crapped out(I don't think so). What sound device are you using?

first step after reformatting or rebuilding is to check the bios. Make sure the on-board audio is enabled. If that is on, it sounds like you have a driver issue, or that it is not enabled for some reason.

In addition to this ^^^ don't forget to reboot after installing the drivers.

                    Edit:
While it's not related to the immediate problem, you should be careful with codec packs. They can be squirrelly, and some come packed with viruses. I'd install VLC player, and that'll take care of most of the codecs you'll need.

Crap. Sorry I added them to my "cart", but I guess they're only for me. Go to this page, and install the 2 chipset drivers...

Awe just give the damn thing a good whack and adjust the rabbit ears. That’ll fix it.

thats my usual method of repair..but considering my limited funds i can't do that just yet.

                              downloaded them, rebooted...still nothing.

checked the first one you put up and it says there is no driver installed for that device....tried to download the driver said it wasnt compatible wit windows xp and gave me the blue screen of death.

so i snatched out the battery and now im here again.

EDIT: fixed it thanks for the help guys
