Yah it should take all of 10 minutes to do but my internet connection has been relaly slow lately since it's ona shared campus line (bandwidth changes constantly) so I get maybe 50-80kb/s of download speed.

I don't know why Wubi didn't work =, it just gave some error after downloading the whole thing.

I think I am just going to spend the cash for the removable hard drive since I need to have a good external backup of ll my family pictures/video and then I can just wipe the ****er clean and start over with ubuntu.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

I can't even read through this whole thread--it makes my head hurt

Installing Slackware from a zip file onto a umsdos filesystem on a 20th-century box with BIOS-compensating drive overlay software--now those were good times!

Just one thing to demonstrate why Linux can be punishing, sometimes. I had my HD partitioned into several pieces for two or three distributions I was running. Now, I only boot Fedora, and was claiming ownership of all the devices. It let me delete one of the partitions, but I couldn't make a new partition from it, and for some reason it always gave an error message. Stupid me, I deleted the partition with my bootloader on it. Off to reinstall grub now.

Ach, Ubuntu. I have had many good experiences with this OS, but recently I decided to do a Wubi installation on my current laptop (P4 3.0, 1gig ram) of 9.10, and sadly I have been very disappointed with the performance when it comes to video. While macromedia flash video from sites such as youtube have always been kinda slow for me on other machines, xvid and x.264 video files have always run like a dream... until trying out 9.10 (I skipped 9.04, so I don't know if this was an issue with that version as well). Now many videos that play perfectly under XP are laggy and choppy. What a headache. I'll probably be able to fix this if I spend some time with it, but honestly I can't be arsed to do so at the moment (and it irks me when I was able to watch 720p x.264 video under ubuntu on an old Athlon XP 1700 with the 8.x series, but a stronger machine is coughing up dust to do the same thing).

Honestly though, that aside, Ubuntu is a wonderful OS for those who are new to linux, or those who don't have the time to learn a lot about linux but want to give something different a try. The ability to install many new programs without having to go out on the internet to hunt them down is also a plus.

Cheers! I'm pretty smashed too. Anyone know why Ubuntu's CEO stepped down today?

I think he wants to push Ubuntu's direction from the ground. Ubuntu's been plagued by buggy releases, and it's hoped that Shuttleworth will get things straightened out with a more hands on approach.

                          Linux Rocks ass

I have been using the different interations of Linux Mint for a while I recently upgraded to Linux Mint 8. Linux Mint is a Ubuntu based distro but with one difference it has a more windows like feel and comes preloaded with many drivers( MP3 Divx Flash) out of the box that other distros dont. My HTPC runs Ubuntu 9.10 which is also great but I find Mint to be a better Windows Replacement. This said my new laptop runs Windows 7 and its beyond awesome

Hate to bring up old shit, but:

                            1. Sgreger, did you ever get this working, and if so how do you like it vs windows?

                            2. Is there any way at all to do this without losing all my (many, many) video/music/media files? These are pretty much all I want to keep from the system, but dont have any external hard drives, or a million memory sticks, lol.

I am thinking of doing this on my older desktop pc - sick of windows xp bogging down. Computer used to be fast as hell, have done all the usual things to try and get it faster, (deleted old programs, defragmented, checked for errors, cleaned registry, stopped unnecessary programs from running at startup) but still slow. Even upgraded RAM, still slow. Just really sick of windows. Have a brand new laptop with Vista, so can still use internet if I need help.

And since I do have the laptop, which is what I mostly use (hardly ever use the desktop anymore - just pisses me off since my laptop is blazing fast), I thought why the hell not use the ol' desktop for a guinnea pig, and try something new.

EDIT: I guess I could just use a memory stick to move all my media to the laptop, but that will take forever, and then Id have to move it all back when done.....any way around this?

16 gig thumb drive. They're like 20-30$ just store it on there. that's the only way I know of keeping everything you want.

You can get a 1TB WD external hard drive off newegg for $80. There's no way to do a full install of any OS without rewriting the partition table (and by this losing your data) unless you have a second drive to install to.
