you can run the cd as a "live cd" and get a feel of what things will be like after a fresh install. but the system will be slower. one sec and I'll get you a screen shot
Operating systems that do not suck. Are there any?

I'm hearing that it's har dto instlal applications on Ubuntu, is this true?
Also, I have a wireless router at my house and am curious if my wireless itnernet will still work if I decide to switch to ubuntu.
How long would you say it takes to reformat, remove windows, and get Ubuntu into a usable condition from beginnign to finish?

Sweet. look real sexy.
So on that page you sent me, I would want to use the link titled "Desktop CD" right?
It's been so long since i've done it, I am wondering how to remove the windows OS. I am going to back up some things on a USB drive, then reformat the entire drive. But then how do I go about deleting windows again? I remember last time I did it through some dos prompt somewhere I think. And then I just run a CD with these ubuntu files and it will allow me to install Ubuntu, correct?

The Ubuntu CD will boot with options, like run as live CD or install. I do not remember the exact terms they use. But if you choose to install you will see a partition manager. That handles the formatting etc. You do have another pc in case you get stuck so you can come to the web to ask questions?Originally posted by sgreger1Sweet. look real sexy.

make sure you have a good old ethernet connection in case you have to download a restricted driver for wifi. Wifi usually works out of the box in Ubuntu but this depends on what type of wireless card you have in the computer. I have seen issues with atheros cards no clue if that has been sorted. Beginning to end probably 15 minutes.

Ive got my mac book handy incase I get stuck, I can then met with the googles and then return to my project.
So should I make a partition as in have ubuntu and windows or should I just clear the whole thing and run only ubuntu? Keep in mind its a laptop with limited resources, about 1 year old.
After I install ubuntu do I delete windows afterwards? Will it guide me through that process?
Sorry it's jsut been so long since I did anything involving changing the OS.

Is there only one hard drive? I'm guessing NTFS. If so I would do a format and a clean install of Ubuntu. How much ram? CPU etc? You can dual boot a computer with both systems. I have Windows on one drive and Linux on another. Installing to the same drive required resizing partitions and if it is NTFS would require 3rd party software..

I think i['ve got one of those linksys routers. Doesnt matter, I have a regular ethernet connection if necessary.
I'm so excited now. I just have to backup some stuff and I may be able to do this tonight. Would be super sweet.
So all I need to do is download the file, burn it to a CD and then restart the computer with the CD in?

After you install Ubuntu windows will be gone already. I usually format my hard drive with the EXT3 and a linux swap. My swap is usually about one gig (1024 megabytes) , and the EXT3 is the rest. EXT3 should mount at /. You will see what I mean. The cd will guide you through this. I am not doing anything so feel free to ask questions.

Off the top of my head I can't remember, i'll have to wait till I get home. Its a toshiba sattelite model I bought in the beginning of 08. I know it's got at least a gig or two of ram, runs vista currently, as for the processor I just can't remember, I hardly ever use the thing since it's so ridden with spyware, viruses etc.
I really just want to get rid of windows and only have ubuntu so that's probbaly what i'll do> i can always fix it later if I have to.

yes. you should look to see what type of wireless interface is installed on your pc. not the router.Originally posted by sgreger1I think i['ve got one of those linksys routers. Doesnt matter, I have a regular ethernet connection if necessary.
