    Guns for anyone?

Thoughts on Gun control? I'm doing a paper on this topic and was wondering what you all thought about this issue.
I'm against it, personally. The 2nd amendment allows me the right to bare arms and defend myself, and whether I have a gun or not, I reserve the right to get one. I believe that if guns were illegal, criminals would have no problem buying these weapons black market while the rest of us are defenseless.
On the other hand, these sub-machine guns such as the AK-47 are pretty rediculous. These are weapons used to mow down humans! Although I do believe in defense, this seems to be much more offensive in nature. Rare is the time that a citizen is attacked in force enough to use an AK-47.
The right to have an individual power over one's own life and security is incredibly important to me. This means that we must be allowed the necessary tools to get the job done if need be. Of course a safety course should be followed and hopefully those with weapons would use them carefully and sparringly.
Weapons will always be important for defense and hunting and I can't see guns ever being illegal when survival is at stake.

I believe all legal citizens, that have a clean record, should be allowed to buy and own whatever firearm they want, but I think they should be required to be registered. That goes for UZIs, AKs, whatever. Now, I believe people who aquire their guns illegally, and use them in crime, should be exremely punished when caught. Like life in a work camp. I mean, we as a society should have zero tolerance for illegal gun crime. Legal law abiding citizens should be allowed to have all the guns and the kinds they want. Most shootings and killings that happen, and usually criminals, often underage, and these thugs did not legally purchase their firearms. We should be super strict on the law breakers, but this should not infringe citizens free rights.

i think it should depend on what crime you committed...if it wasnt weapon related you should still be able to purchase a firearm

I was going to post a link to the last gun control thread, but it seems to have vanished. What a disaster it was!

I love guns. When I was a kid it was all about playing war and having cool toy guns.

bazzah, sadly you sound like a typical liberal who wishes to ban things they don't even have an understanding of. A legal ak-47 is semi-automatic. It's nothing more than a rifle. Full auto weapons require a federal tax stamp and some paperwork. Even so, an AK 47 would not be considered a "sub machine gun." Please educate yourself before making these statements. Thanks.

The laws in the UK are extremely strict on firearms. I've used rifles and pistols most of my adult life due to my job and with the knowledge I have I'd hate to see them in the public domain in the UK as civvies here don't have a clue and I doubt they'd ever want to have a clue about weapon safety.

Even with these restrictions we've had the odd nutter running down the street shooting people and with the amount of nutters that I see on the streets every day here in London and if guns were readily available - I'd simply leave the country.

Added to this there is still the domestic problem in Northern Ireland which is still potentially a big problem.

In principle though, it is every English mans right to own a shotgun.
