I've grown to like a lot of mass market/cheap beers over the years. I used to be very particular, and still am in many ways, but I can enjoy a Bud, Corona, or Natty Boh when offered one. I do draw the line at light beer though. I'd rather have a glass of water than a light beer :^D
Is it safe to say that every single popular beer...stinks?

i really dont think pilsner urquell is anything to write home about. i mean its kind of cool to have just because its an ancient beer and having it is like doing ettan los, its just got that old unchanged flavor. but realistically its a more expensive watery beer just like all the shit you said you hate.
i think microbrews are the only worthwhile beers really. sierra nevada, anything by new holland or bells or flying dog. anything thats hops as **** usually wins me over.
but cmon man, labatt? labatts pretty good shit for the cheaper beers. get off your high horse.

I did find this line amusing:
....The brewing change will push Old Style into the more costly premium category of Coors, Miller and Budweiser....

Sorry I couldn't resist the observation....
In order to think it tastes like rat piss,
wouldn't you have to know what rat piss tastes like?
Did you take a blind taste test?

The most popular tavern beers there at the time were Old Style and Strohs. I also used to drink Andecker which was Pabst's version of Michelob.
Coors was a big deal back then because it wasn't sold east of the Mississippi river.

As a homebrewer, you can guess my opinion.
I get a kick out of the "frost brewed", "made cold", etc etc. ALL beer is boiled... typically for an hour. If it wasn't, the alpha acids in the hops wouldn't become bitter. That isn't a nice marketing image though, so they like to focus on the cold lagering stage.
Recently I saw one of the big American brands advertising that they used three hop additions... ummm... that's pretty standard, and probably a low number for most microbrews. If you want lots of hop additions, check out Dogfish Head 60/90/120 minute.
I'm just sick of closed minded people thinking everything other than Bud/Miller/Coors is weird. There's a lot of them where I live. I know from experience that it's actually a challenge to brew something with that little flavor. You drink your rice/corn beer (fallout from prohibition BTW), and I'll stick with barley thanks...
