The WSJ journal seems to think that some people are simply stocking up in the hope that they will make a profit in the future if new legislation is passed

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123984046627223159.html

However, (to go completely off topic) what I find more disconcerting is the amount of guns that simply find their way into the wrong hands

    http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/cngrte...09.pdf#page=10

    http://appropriations.house.gov/Witn...l_03_24_09.pdf

and yes, I did see Fox News's piece on the 90% myth

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/elec...umber-claimed/

I do believe though that the Fox news article misses the point as 17.5% of the total gun seizures is still a significant amount. Moreover, the NRA argument that the ATF figures are being used to weaken the Second Amendment doesn't hold water either. IMO it merely points to a serious failure in controlling the flow of arms.

From a personal perspective only, the reason I will buy more guns this year than last is simply the unknowns of the Obama administrations plans to go after gun rights. There is a very real possibility that the “assault” weapons ban of the Clinton administration will come back. I don’t want 100’s of guns in my collection, but there are 5 or 6 that I do want that would probably be unavailable if this ban goes back into effect.

+1. That's exactly why sales have gone up.

AR 10/15 parts are gettting harder and harder to find. I think that the companies that were manufacturing this stuff simply sold out and stopped/dramatically decreased production for fear that the stuff would be banned, and they would have lots of useless stock on their hands.

EDIT: A lot of my post deleted. Im sick of arguing this issue.

Karl, a significant number of those guns are fully automatic, which I can promise did not come from private citizens of the US. A fully automatic AK-47 that sells for around $10,000 here, after a ATF background check and a $200 tax stamp, can be purchased from China or on the world black market for $200. The criminals in Mexico are not stupid enough to pay more than they have to.

            Exactly right, Link.

I lived on the outskirts of Houston when Rita came through after Katrina. The freeway getting out of town was completely shut down for days and literally thousands of people from the city were milling about through all the neighborhoods in the surrounding area looking for food and gas.

Then after Ike there was no power or gas for several weeks. Once you go through things like that you realize that it would not take much more than no power, no gas and no food on the shelves of the grocery stores for things to get out of hand very quickly. One would have to be a fool to think that cops or any branch of the government will be there to take care of you and your family just when you need it the most. One is much better off being prepared and self-reliant, especially husbands and fathers.

However, defending oneself against predators is not the purpose of the 2nd amendment. It is to keep an encroaching government in check via a well armed populace. Therefore I believe the increase in gun sales is a wonderfullly positive development. The more guns in the hands of decent people who do not work for the government is a great thing.

I gotta say, I like that gun sales are up so long as the people who buy them are responsible and competent with their firearms. Those are two big factors, though, and aren't always fulfilled no matter how thorough background checks and whatever else take place.

Let's not get into a discussion on the 2nd Amendment please. The last time we did that things got ugly and went past 20 pages worth of arguing.

I hear from several people, kinf of, " in the know" that have told me that this will be a summer of riots in the US. Not sure why. I think simply civil protest that will get out of hand. Obama is starting to retract election promises. So what do you think?

Lets be nice here. I'm just asking for opinions. I don't want to start a war on this site guys....and gals.

Well the reason people are hording guns and ammo is because we know what happens when the lbierals get into power, and everyone i afraid obama is going to take our guns.

For example the mexican cartels are fighting at the border, he of course apologized and said its all our fault since they are using 17% american guns, so he has introduced some new measure which sounds mroe and more like gun control leading to gun confiscation.
