27% Rise In Gun Sales This Year....

Holy crap!! I just heard on the news that there is a 27% rise in gun sales so far this year. People must be scared. I hear from several people, kinf of, " in the know" that have told me that this will be a summer of riots in the US. Not sure why. I think simply civil protest that will get out of hand. Obama is starting to retract election promises. So what do you think?

Lets be nice here. I'm just asking for opinions. I don't want to start a war on this site guys....and gals.

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I think that number is low. It doesn't count anyone who bought a gun without a federal background check. I know for a fact that gun shops, ammo & gun manufacturers cannot keep up with demand. my favorite dealer has a small shop that last year I could stand around and BS with him for an hour with no interruptions, last week he barely had time to say Hi. It used to be him and 1 guy ran the place, now it's him and 4 people. With a couple more part timers some days.

I think people see bad times coming. Whether that vision is true or not can be debated, but it cannot be denied that Americans are stocking up on all kinds of things to prepare. Food, Ammo, and in my case snus.

bigger LOL, I had to post that because in a post earlier today I said "I try to stay out of political, reliigious, etc threads". And this thread is slightly political. Well, maybe not stay out of them but I try not to push my views cuz I'm an idiot.

Nah, you are a smart and fun guy. This is good for economy, 27% increase in gun sales generates lots of cash. In a way, it is helping the economy!

People, because they are bored and need to exert some sort of feeling of control, are overdramatizing our current financial situation.

The FBI says it carried out 1,213,885 criminal background checks on prospective firearms buyers in January of 09 and 1,259,078 in February, jumps of 28 per cent and 23.3 per cent respectively. Keen demand turned the stocks of publicly-trade firearms companies like Smith & Wesson (up 80 per cent since November) and Sturm Ruger (up more than 100 per cent) into shining stars on the New York Stock Exchange.

Excellent and unbiased article on the Examiner and directly related to the topic. This is your thread PP, so if you don't like articles, please let me know & I'll remove it:

Gun sales rise as Americans begin to fear each other?

Social unrest fears may be one of the reasons that gun sales have skyrocketed in the United States since November 2008 when Barack Obama won the presidency. Gun dealers report they have never seen anything like this before.

                The question is:
are Americans beginning to be afraid of each other as the mood of the country become more apprehensive about the economy?

The analysis published by U.S. Army War College did nothing to quell the uneasiness. It listed "unforeseen economic collapse" as one of the possible causes of future "widespread civil violence."

In the first two months of 2009, approximately 2.5 million Americans bought firearms, a 26 percent increase over the same period in 2008. Because of Obama's rhetoric during the presidential campaign, his election meant to gun owners that he would push for new laws to make the purchases of firearms more difficult. It has even effected the New York Stock Exchange as the sales of publicly-traded firearms manufacturers were up from 80% to 100%.

At first there was a rush to beat any efforts by the Obama administration and Democrats in Congress to change gun ownership legislation. But after he took office, gun dealers begin to see the mood of buyers show a fear of social unrest as more Americans lost their jobs. The FBI reports that it carried out 1,213,885 criminal background checks for prospective buyers in January and 1,259,078 in February, jumps of 28% and 23.3% respectively.

For Americans who are aware of what happens in foreign countries where there have been riots and street demonstrations in response to fewer jobs and higher prices, gun sales will continue their upward climb especially if Obama appoints judges who agree with him on the right to bear arms. It could force Americans who are concerned about self-protection to go underground to purchase ammunition and guns as the economy worsens.

I was really wanting to get a mossberg 500 or even a maverick for simple home defense, but my wife doesn't want a single gun of any kind in the house. Now, when the starving mob comes up my driveway this summer, I'm going to tell her, "Go get the gun, oh, nevermind  ".

Seriously though, the folks who act like people are overreacting are just as bad as the apocalypse nuts, each being on opposite ends of the spectrum. I'm just the regular Joe who wants to blow your ass back out of my driveway JUST IN CASE something hits the fan. And I would bet most who are buying now fit the exact same category.

This isn't the first time, nor will it be the last, that the country has freaked out and bought a bunch of stuff it didn't need. Anyone still have a gas mask or a fallout shelter?

Who's thinking about shooting someone anyway? Someone who doesn't even exist in reality? Isn't that an already extreme form of ideation? Do I have to get scared of all these people who are buying guns with nothing to shoot and therefore have itchy trigger fingers? Aren't there more real things to worry about than potential people to shoot with guns?

Having a gun isn't about planning to shoot someone any more than having a fire extinguisher is about planning on starting fires. Both are for emergency purposes. I hope I never have to point a gun at another human being, I will if forced to, but I hope and pray not to. Anyone who buys a gun hoping to, or planning on, killing a person deserves to be in a mental hospital or jail.

I agree. I'd also like to point out that this "country" didn't freak out and buy anything in the past. Individuals bought what they chose to buy in case something went wrong; They exercised their individual rights because they didn't want to depend on the government IF swomething did go wrong.
Some people like to be prepared and self reliant while others simply can not or will not entertain the possibility of chaos.
Back in 1999, folks were buying up water and what not. People still laugh at those folks, but you see what you got from the Govt. down in Louisiana during the Katrina storm, eh?
