I often sit and think about it. It's driven me to the point of existential crisis many a time.

NOTICE; Although I didn't need to edit this post..........I thought I would just because I edit almost all my posts. Almost 100% of the time for spelling, punctuation, or some other little thing I forgot. So, if you see that I have edited a post don't think I actually changed my words or comment. I love that gif, and the high def version on youtube is truly humbling. Just think how vast this planet is, and then how much larger the solar system itself is. And to think, this single system is part of a much greater one, which again, is only a fraction of what else is out there. Humbling and fantastic to think about.

Current science says that the universe is about 13.5-14 billion years old, which means that there's not too much universe after that, unless you pointed it in the opposite direction back towards us (given that you set up the telescope in that location 13 billion years ago to compensate for the light traveling to us). However, as an armchair cosmologist, I have the feeling that in reality we exist in the depths of a dark ocean of some sort, that galaxies are alive in a way we don't understand yet, and that there's a great deal more beyond what telescopes can show us presently, sort of like how a fish thinks that the water is the extent of its universe.

I keep up with current space stuff at Universe Today, and love the daily pics at NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day Archive. Both rock.

I don't think that we'll ever understand all of the complexities of the universe (or perhaps multiverse). However, I love all of the new developments. I want more space exploration. I want to know everything I possibly can about the universe before I die.

I love talking/reading about space. I'm so glad this topic exists. Thanks lxskllr. This beats the hell out of a political argument.

We're certainly looking. Apart from SETI and similar operations, the very recently launched Kepler probe will look at a particular portion of sky specifically to look for Earth-like planets orbiting around other stars. If/when we find them, we should have the technology to get chemical composition readings of the planets and their atmosphere that may provide certain signatures of life as we know it. And near-future telescope technology will allow us to zero in on objects to a power far greater than that of the Hubble. May we all live long enough to experience any major findings these projects potentially realize.
