Will the Southern U.S. states every get a good rep.?

This happened about 60 miles from my home town. It even baffles me. I am just glad his name was "Junior" not "Bubba".

With people like that it will be hard for the "South to Rise Again".
Sheez, we have stupid people like that here in California. The South does not have a corner on stupidity.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!! I thought calipornia was the land of fruits and nuts.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

        Ignorance is everywhere.

Its just that here in the south the ignorant ones are REALLY ignorant.

You know a bar here where I live in LaGrange actually ran an Obama supporter out of a bar?

He was here trying to campaign and well i guess those folks in the bar didnt take too kindly.

I mean racial ignorance and just shear stupidity can be found down here yes, but i love living in the south and i love the way of life here.

Ive been many places and will always call the south my home. Theres nowhere else like it.

I just put up with the bible thumpers, racists, and morons, but i think too many people stereotype the south to be honest.

Lets just pray, the man and woman from these two stories, never meet and have kids together.

I agree with grim. I've lived all up and down the east coast, and my two favorite places were South Carolina and Georgia. Granted, there aren't as many "entertainment" type places down here (i.e. Six Flags and other amusement parks, malls, etc.) and the pace of life is slower, but that can also be a good thing. People in the south just seem to be in an overall better mood most of the time; they can take time out of their day just to stop and say hello, or respond to a polite excuse me. It seems the farther north you go, the more important everyone thinks they are, and can't be bothered to take the time out of their important lives to take you into account. Yes, there is intolerance, and ignorance, and yes, even stupidity, but honestly tell me there aren't any stupid or ignorant people in YOUR hometown. This behavior is everywhere, the south just gets the bad rap for it.

You're dam right about that. My wife and I just got back from Georgia. We spent 10 days down there looking for property to move my breeding facilities too. The people were so nice. If you are on the street and you walk past someone they all say hi or whatever. That wouldn't happen in Chicago or New York thats for sure. Also people are polite drivers too. The pace is much slower and I think people are not as stressed out. We can't wait to move. There are stupid people everywhere so its just not in the south. I just wish they would stop flocking to me.

I was born and spent most of my formative years down south. I've lived in three deep red states under the mason dixon line.

I love the food (BBQ, cornbread, hash/grits and butter, fried okra!, iced tea), the beautiful rolling hills and trees (especially in the Carolinas,) lower cost of living, the slower pace and the apparently friendly atmosphere - although southerners are very adept at smiling to your face and gossiping/MF'ing you behind your back, especially if you're an outsider. "American by birth; southern by the grace of god." I appreciate being taught respect, manners, and a unique sense of emotional reserve/composure that has served me well and still remains with me ~20 years later. My southern accent is long gone, but I still hold doors and "Yes ma'am/sir" people.

I clearly remember the overt racism -- some of my classmates belting out N-word bombs even in pre-school.. something that was obviously taught to them by the adults in their home; whites calling blacks that in elementary, and blacks calling us 'crackers' and 'honkeys.' By the time I moved away when I was nearly in middle school, I knew all about racist hate slang but was clueless about human reproduction.

Just as you guys said, and really, it's just like anywhere else I've lived, you just have to take the good with the bad. I'd consider retiring there (probably SC,) but based on what I experienced, I'd never want to raise a child there.

I've heard that Ashville, NC is a cool place - someone described it as like the Berkeley of the south. True?

I lived there for a couple years recently. Yes, like Berkeley and most other college towns it's very liberal, with lots of hippies and freaks running around doing their thing. Strangely, though, Asheville is completely flanked by rural types who are diametrically opposed to the liberal urban thing, so there was a lot of tension. Towards the end I lived with my girlfriend up in the hills some distance out of town, and the locals were not at all receptive to us. Going to the grocery store, for instance, was a scary ordeal. If looks could kill...

The city proper is charming, with lots of great places to eat, drink and be merry. Once you get familiar with the city you realize there's a lot of cultural vitality, especially with the music, which tends to be an interesting blend of punk and southern rock. And the big venue, The Orange Peel, brings in a shockingly awesome line of great artists, and I saw a few of the best shows ever there. Squarepusher and Broadcast from Warp Records in England were ultra-cool, and Bill Frisell's jazz trio was completely mindblowing.

Oh, and the MJ there is by far the finest I've ever experienced.

My personal summation: A fantastic place to spend a few days or a week or two, but unless you're a die-hard slacker, you don't want to live there. If you're impervious to cultural bias or have found a nice middle-ground attitude, a big cheap house in the hills with the city closeby is a pretty nice option. I had a lot of fun there but the lifestyle almost wrecked me.

The MJ there sucks big time. One of my friends has lived in Ga for 25 years and he can't wait for me to visit , so we can smoke mine cuz he hasn't found any worth a crap there. This visit he said he had some good smoke, I took 2 hits and fired-up one of mine. Never attempted to smoked his again. I'll be stocking up big time before I move, thats for sure.

I guess it depends on what kind you like. If you like the stuff that's going to make you mumble to yourself in the corner, then the NC mountains homegrown is an option.

PP, what part of GA are you looking to move to? Just curious. And spurious cigarettes aside, I can say that I would absolutely retire in the south. If I make it past 35, that is...more on that later...

We are looking in Newnan, next to Peachtree City. That south west of atl.

After about 45 years of smokin that shit it needs to be pretty dam good to make me sit in the corner and mumble. Hell even the good stuff doesn't do much to me anymore............except keep me from smoking real cigs.
