They finally dumped Bob Rock and got a proper producer....I don't think this will go to #1, but it's a hell of a lot better than St. Anger IMHO. I've seen some scathing reviews on other boards, but people have to realize that the Master of Puppets days are over... :wink:

I say good on them for making it this far, considering that they have endured a band member death, fan backlash, a control-freak producer and nervous breakdowns.

IMHO, Metallica has been a downward spiral starting with Black getting progressively worse. The Cliff Burton/Dave Mustaine days are lost forever only survived by those who knew that Garage Days and Garage days revisited were released LOOOOONG ago. The fact that they milked so many fans by re-recording/releasing those albums, and then the kick in the nuts which was a 100% cover album... /sigh. St Anger isnt even worth the trash bag I'd have to throw it in to put it in the garbage.

I heard some of the new stuff on the radio the other day and started rockin out. Forget the name of the song that was on the radio, but it was pretty damn good.

The song in that link is OK at best, but like you said... Still 10000000x better than every piece of trash they called songs on St. Anger.


Best "Metallica" stuff that has been released in years have been the Metallica tribute albums..

I guess I am one of the many old fans that will never see Metallica as anything other than "Metallicops" nowadays. (see link below)

I actually really like this song. From this song it seems like they are going back to their Load/Reload style, and I loved those albums.

I hope the rest of the songs on the album can keep up with this one.

I was an obsessed Metallica fan from 88 until 91 or so. The first big concert I went to was The Cult/Metallica "Justice" tour in the summer of 89.

What I think is kinda cool about this new track that it starts at sounding like a Load song, but then at around 3:40 it goes to something that resembles a thrashy ...And Justice For All tune. Of course the riffs at 5:00 sound like "One," and the harmonized guitar lines at 5:20 also sound classic (like the ...AJFA song's interlude itself.) The song is what, nearly 8 minutes long? Just like an old Puppets tune. And by god, Kirk doesn't use a freaking Wah pedal in his solo. I think Hell just froze over.

I'm gonna reserve judgement until I buy their new album, but I give them props for at least trying to reach back and bring their older sound into where their heads are now. Maybe the only source of youthful anger that Kirk can inject into his leads is if he didn't sell his gorgeous $12m SanFran mansion before the housing market took a dump.

These days, though, I'm definitely more into Northern Euro metal. Gimme Jorn Lande, Soilwork, Nightwish, or Meshuggah any day. But Master of Puppets will always be one of those untouchable albums to me.

As a young man, I used to worship Metallica... I had every album, and I saw them play twice... Then after the Black Album their music turned to crap... Then they appeared before Congress to promote laws to prosecute people who just wanted to hear their music... That was it for me...

I have to say that the more that I listen to it, the more I like it. If the whole album sounds like this, I'll definitely be buying it. I agree that they seem to span several different albums within this one song. Kinda cool. 8)

I could swear I hear some Deep Purple influence in there right near the end...

I hope it does well. What I've heard isn't bad, but I've mostly been over Metallica for 10 years or so. Liked Garage Inc. though, I still put that one on now and then.

They should have Gorgoroth open this time around. :twisted:

I think St. Anger is a good metal album...however, when you see Metallica on it, you just expect greatness. I cannot say that St. Anger is great.

Kill 'em All to the Black Album. Some of the greatest music ever produced.

I listen to them all religiously. But as for current music. I say, "Thank God for Slipknot.

St. Anger was a big disappointment. They addressed the criticism that they sounded too mainstream by using terrible recording and a drum kit that sounded like someone was beating on a plastic barrel.

I do love Load, Re-Load and S&M, although they are completely different creatures than anything pre-Black Album.

I came to Metallica right as they were releasing Load, and so I only got into the original albums after I loved Load. To me, it's easy to love both sides of Metallica. Master of Puppets is such a ridiculously powerful album - in my opinion the highest-quality rock album that I know.

I remember listening to Orion inside a Blockbuster Music store, back when they still existed and let people pop in the CD to listen to it before buying. Orion just rocked me so hard, I couldn't believe it.

I like this song, by the way (not to get too far off-topic)! Something about it feels like it's a tad bit too slow, like it should be played faster. But they are getting old... maybe it's the best they can do, in which case I can still respect it.

After hearing some of this, I'm actually pretty impressed. It actually does capture the vibe of the early albums, without coming off as a conscious reversion to it, and while not ignoring what was actually good about their albums in the 90's.

Know what, I think I might actually buy this one.


Edit: Oh, and Jamesstew, have you seen the doc, "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica?" It's from the black album days, and there's a spot where James does an impression of the Cowardly Lion. It's spot on, and it's a riot. If you have netflix or something, it's worth renting just for that bit.
