I heard the new song on the radio the other day, thought it was pretty good, and actually sounded like metallica, which I thought of St Anger until I recognised Hetfield's voice.

Got the new Slipknot album today, and I like it a lot.

      They posted another one:

This one sounds more "Puppets-like"...I think I like the other one better, though.

I bought the new album, Death Magnetic, about 2 hours ago. F'n sweet. I LOVE this album. Don't expect St. Anger when you buy this. It blows it away, which isn't a tall task, anyway. My fav tracks: That Was Just Your Life, The Day That Never Comes, All Nightmare Long, CYANIDE, The Unforgiven III, The Judas Kiss, My Apocalypse. This material has sort of an And Justice For All sound to it. Badass. I def recommend.

I second this.. as an old 30-something year old fart, and a 20-something year fan of Met (admittedly not so much recently as I've kinda progressed to euro power/death metal) it's "up there" with AJFA, but this one is mixed properly.

They've unleashed Kirk (such as he is.. an overrated lead player, IMO), sounds like they broke out their old Mesa Mark amps, and maybe even have standard tunings on their guitar. Very old school. I honestly didn't think they had it in them.

If a time machine existed I'd take this album and play it for my teenaged self in 1988 or so. I think my virginal, pimply self would have mostly approved.

BTW, I bought the CD -- does anyone else think it was mastered a little "hot"? I think I can hear a little digital clipping on the rhythm guitar tracks and cymbals. Maybe it's my system here.

Man, hearing this just makes me sad. I bought Load but only listened to it a few times. Haven't heard anything they've done since then save this and I'm glad I haven't  I think it may have been the day they first cut their hair, but they haven't been the same. I can remember jamming to The Four Horsemen in a freezing Canadian garage in the middle of winter. That was music worthy of freezing your nuts off to thrash out of an unceremoniously loud amplifier. This... this is not a worthy adversary, dude.

Actually, in my honest opinion, this was and always will be Metallica...

Cliff was a genius musician in so many ways, I agree. Jason is just a bass player. Love Cliff's playing on Orion - it's not one that most people seem to remember, but it's such an epic masterpiece, and Cliff's is so central to the song. Metallica stopped making tunes like that after Cliff died.

I dunno man. Jason was great too. Ever been to a show where Jason would come out after the show was over and play his bass until his fingers bled? He will never be cliff... But he has heart.

I agree that Jason's a showman - he loved being on stage and doing crazy stuff. He's even a really good bass player...but not the same sort of "special" bass player that Cliff was. Cliff had an unusual talent.

At any rate, yeah, the last time I saw them live was in 1994 and it was a rocking show. From what I hear their live show is still kicking serious butt too. They've always been a great band live, in any time period. Their songwriting went downhill after '91, though, I think.

                        Most definately.

The live shows are still top notch and I look forward to the upcoming tour.

Though I will be very tempted to bring a paint marker, write douchebag on my beer bottle and huck it at Lars

There is actually a Metallica cover band (Battery) that puts on one hell of a show.

When they played Orion it almost brought a tear to my eye.

The guys played a 5-hour endless set over shots of jagermeister and cheap beer. Excellent show.

Sweet. I saw a band in Camden who called themselves "Beatallica" - they dressed and played like Metallica circa 1987, but they did these wild hybrid tunes like "Face The Thing That Should Not Let It Be" and "Hey Dude"
