I just bought a 32 g iPad first gen for $80. It is in perfect condition wit a case and 2 chargers. I'm typing on it now. I think I could sell it for double if not more. Then I would buy a Kidle fire hd 7". Tho it's only 16 gig. But it would be new. I guess I'm asking people who are familiar with both. What is the better tablet fo around $160. I got a hell of a deal on the iPad but I have a feeling that if I don't make a move now it will not be worth as much in a few months. So let me know yor thoughts. And bear with my lack of tablet typingo skills.

I don't use Apple products. They give control to Apple at the expense of the user. The better tablet for me is the one that gives me control. People wouldn't accept limits on their desktop computers. I don't understand why they do on their handhelds. I'd get the Kindle and root it. Possibly install cm.

I like my kindle fire. It is great for reading but i don't use it for web surfing much since i have a chromebook as well. Someone is willing to pay much more than that ipad is worth, which i would value at 0 dollars, but everyone has their preferences.

KIndlefire hd is quite hard to root, needs two bootloaders. No SD or microsd slot either so... These companies are all evil be it microsoft, apple, amazon or google. Their all after your money or data to sell to the highest bidder.
Wait till an Opensource tablet gets released in my opinion or get a tablet that you can install replicant on or cyanogen mod without gapps.

I would get rid of the 1. First of all it is so dated more and more of the OS features and apps as they move to newer versions just won't work anymore on the first gen. It is very underspec'd compared to their development target.
The big advantage of going IOS over Android is typically multimedia related. IOS is better at it due to the real time kernel. Android does not have that and has been a thorn in the side of Android and a poor choice by Google. Of course the other reason to go IOS over Android is you have way more money than tech savvy.

I have a cheap tablet I got from BigLots for $80. It's no competitor to an iPad or Kindle, but it came rooted. I gutted the builtin spyware and most apps, and run mostly libre software. I'd love to have a fully free tablet. If I could get a fully free phone, it would hasten my purchase decision.Originally posted by NeonMouse View Post

How about some of those Asus or Acer tablets?Originally posted by lxskllr View PostI have a cheap tablet I got from BigLots for $80. It's no competitor to an iPad or Kindle, but it came rooted. Also, I bricked a first gen Fire trying to root it lol. Careful with those things. OH what about a Nexus? Do those still come pretty much unlocked?Originally posted by FrostedI knew he was committed as an actor but I think he went too far in his latest role as Princess Diana

I don't think they're fully free. When I say fully free, I mean every bit of code from the firmware to the O/S should have source code available. No binary blobs in the kernel, or anything.Originally posted by halocog View PostHow about some of those Asus or Acer tablets?
I'd consider paying real money for something like that, even though I'm not in the market for a "serious" tablet. My needs now are a cheap Ereader, and quick web browser, with a few additional amusements, all at a cost that isn't a tragedy if it gets lost or stolen. For real money, I'd expect a real GNU/Linux desktop. No Android.

Yeah. I jailbroke my iPad 2. Sort of a waste of time for me, as I didn't really get any benefit from it. If there's something specific you want, you make be able to get it through jailbreaking but for most people it isn't worth doing.Originally posted by Bigblue1 View PostSpeaking of Bricking. anybody ever jailbreak an Ipad and if so is it worth it.Originally posted by FrostedI knew he was committed as an actor but I think he went too far in his latest role as Princess Diana

So been messing around with my $80 Ipad and have decided to keep it. It seems apps wise most of what I want is still applicable. and hey it was only $80 and I'm more then less just gonna use it for web browsing and the occasional time wasting game. After all your comments I was ready to ditch it but really it's gonna suit my needs real well at a substantial discount.

It's easy to to get hung up on feature creep, where you start thinking, "Well, for $10 more, I could get a computer that does x". You decide on that $10, then of course for another $10, you can get a bit more, and so on, and so on. None of that takes into account that the original item worked just fine for your purposes, and the added features don't add value for you.Originally posted by Bigblue1 View PostSo been messing around with my $80 Ipad and have decided to keep it. tl;dr
Enjoy your iPad. I couldn't use one, but my uses don't matter for you.

Just realized that you pretty much summed up Plato's allegory of the cave in a modern way. ie. I never have had a device that can do what this does so to me it is beyond anything I could have imagined. So I've poked my head a bit further up and out or (left to right). I hope I can be content with this section of the cave tho..... Also in the boating world we refer to it as 2foot-itis. But it's rarely ever just 2 more feet that you want no matter what your need's are. Hey we live in a super commercial and consumptive world were we are told we need this new thing whether it is needed or not. It's like when you used to go into a garage 25 yrs ago there were all sorts of scraps. Lumber, hardware, pipe fittings it didn't matter people saved everything. Just in case. Now most peoples garages, you could have a brunch in without much clean up. My garage is an old school organized mess. My neighbors prolly talk shit about it till they need me to do something and I have what it takes on hand....... I don't mind tho as I just charge them for those scraps that were paid for by somebody else on some other job I was on.....Originally posted by lxskllr View PostIt's easy to to get hung up on feature creep, where you start thinking, "Well, for $10 more, I could get a computer that does x". Unfortunately feature creep is my state of existence. Particularly when it comes to processor speed on these devices. But my needs are specific and there is value added for what I use them for. And I use them in a heavy capacity in what is a successful for profit endeavor and they are a factor in maximizing that profit in a way that a laptop would actually be a worse choice.
