I have a special appreciation for Bordeaux red wines, which in my view still represent the most sophisticated in the art of wine-makeing, though other countries are definitely catching up. You just cannot go wrong with a Bordeaux A.O.C. wine, while with practically all other origins, it's often hit or miss.
I also like Spanish Tempranillo and Syrah, Austrian Blaufränkischer (I don't know if there's an English word for the wine, it's upposed to be a Pinot Noir variety), German Spätburgunder (also a Pinot Noir variety) and Dornfelder (the latter unfortunately ranges from year to year between "absolutely great" and "just drinkable").
I have also tried great Merlots from Chile and Cabernet sauvignons from California, among others, but I'm mostly sticking with the other varieties that I've mentioned.
Cheers!
