Oh yes. Mine is kept outside and it doesn't run much in the winter. When I lived here from '79-'89, we just had an insulated wooden box out in the snow. It was ok, but stuff got "burned" a lot then cause the temp fluctuates too much. -20 becomes 0 and then 10 and then it's 28 and it snows, then back to -10 etc baack and forth for like 9 months a year. You might even get "two winters" where everything thaws out for a week and then winter starts all over (either that or turns everything into a frozen mud ball). So lots of ice crystals get in your stuff normally and damages it. Also we have lots of animals here that want to get at your meat. We don't have a large variety of insects here but the bottom of the food chain is carnivorous rodents of all types. Freezer keeps them out, too.

Yeah they are good in salads. I've been just dipping them in mustard lately though. Or just cover them with hot sauce if I'm on the go. Note to self: put mustard in snack bag.

So I found a great way to enjoy tinned fish without the crackers. Put them in a salad really good and really healthy.....

I love sardines, kippers, anything like that. I love smoked clams but dislike store-bought.
My favorite preserved fish is "squaw candy". Its the strip belly meat and fat dried at the bottem edge of a salmon fillet (the part you cut into when you clean fish). Dried and smoked with alder wood, the strips are stiff as a board and about the size of a liqorace stick. Silvery skin on one side and meat on the other. You gotta try it!
The closest thing you are gonna get commercially is a "salmon stick" from Alaska Wild Game Products.
