Sounds tasty! The only thing that would make it better is to cook it with some herbal butter or oil.

Just ran out to the store to pick up some turnips and parsnips for my lamb shoulder chops. Figured I'd pick up a couple of cans of sprats. Well they actually had 4 cans of the Gold version this time which according to other sardine snobs are better. I think it was a mis-ship or something. Anyway on amazon they go for twice as much as the ones I usually get and I got them for the same price a very reasonable $1.99 for like 5.6 ozs. The sardine gods must be rewarding me for this thread.....

I absolutely love them. I like them best in water or soybean/olive oil.

Kirkland has some good stuff. Pike's Market is 2nd best, only to fresh! I smoke my own when I go salmon fishing, now THAT's good eats.

Speaking of smoked salmon. Our friend Roo was kind enough to send me some straight from a fish market in Seattle. He said it was from the the best place in the area. Can't remember exactly. OOOH but was it choice. Can't believe your eating supermarket stuff when you are so close to the Real thing.....

The best I had was some brand from France. I got them at BigLots. They were packed in olive oil, and the one I liked best had whole chilis inside the tin. I got some sprats from Scotland once, but tbh, I prefer the Brunswick herring. I agree regarding smoke flavor. The Brunswick is mellow, and natural tasting, but I've had some brands that go too far. I like the smoked salmon that comes packed in mylar envelopes in boxes. You see it pop up around Xmas time. I'll usually get a pack then, and hope some stick around BigLots long enough to go on clearance. You can get it for less than 50ยข per ounce if you're lucky.

I've really become somewhat of a snob. I only like the sprats or "brisling" Can't even think about some that only fit 3-4 in a can anymore. It's a big difference guys. Search out smoked sprats in the european ethnic section of your grocer. Oh I will eat the king oscar mediterranean style as it's just tomato and olive and stuff. they are quite good.... still have an issue with the artificial smoke flavoring but they're good every once in awhile for a change......

:^D Yup. The cats get to clean the tin when I'm finished. The girl's more interested than the boy. In general, she's more interested in life. She checks out everything new to see if it suits her. She cleans my cereal bowls, and she's a much better hunter. The boy only gets interested when he sees his sister interested. Otherwise, he tends to stick to the same old routine.
