And when someone calls the USA a batshit crazy Phuqed up mess, I just tend to nod and keep going about my bidneth! I have never been particularly proud of our "USA" centric way of dealing with the world, but I spent 20 years traveling somewhere really different, gave me pause to try to see things from different perspectives. I was raised my whole life with that "Remember the Alamo" way of thinking, but I read a lot, and screwed all that good indoctrination up!
That, and the fact that some of my neighbors are the most ignorant, gun loving, negro loathing, flag waiving white trash I have ever seen, has forced me to reflect more and more about my beliefs.
Someone living in Denmark could not logically make an argument that what works there is going to scale up to a country of 300 million people spread across what are essentially 51 different states with their own governing bodies.
Maybe some of the more "individual" states of the USA should start declaring independence then! I've always wondered what would happen if one did.
I'm sorry I used the throwaway comment "You're all crazy" in response to PPs first post - it was meant to be flippant but fairly friendly - as in "hey you guays, you're all crazy". I've been here a very long time and I feel comfortable saying things like that.
I haven't insulted your culture in anything that I've written. I am not in a position to take any rights of US citizens away as you well know and nobody with any power will do anything based on what we're talking about here. I've had a look at your Harvard study and as with all these things people on both sides of the argument seem to manage to massage the stats one way or the other - I can't see any info on who funded it, but I would guess some body which is pro-gun-ownership.
You have done nothing but shout at me here and you are accusing me of insulting the whole of the culture of the USA which I haven't done. But you have said:
"This forum has made me really hate Europe I must say. The mindset of the people out there is so backwards" - which is much stronger than anything I have said.
You are taunting me because I said I have no desire to put myself in a more dangerous situation than I need to by coming to the USA. You say that no-one should suggest that other countries are safer than yours ... but then you go on to say:
"Try living in ****ing Los Angeles or the wrong part of any major city and you will see what a "massacre" looks like"
I can't see much consistency there.
If my thoughts on this topic are so bad for your stress levels that you can do nothing more than shout-typing and contradict yourself then I suggest you leave the computer alone for the rest of the day and go and enjoy a salad made out of your synthetic tomatoes!

Sometimes wrong and sometimes right .... but ALWAYS certain!!!
I believe the Quail in Arizona are specially trained to only flush directly in line with your shooting partner, Fact!
Wheres the sport in that lol. Impressive on behalf of the beaters and dogs to achieve that. Grouse and Pheasant are my ones, the glorious 12th is the start of the grouse season here (Monday just gone). I used to shoot rifles competitively and was quite successful, was the captain of my club at uni, don't own rifles anymore as nowhere to keep them.

No worries. I knew what you said was done in jest. Same with my "UK is going to France" comment.
A little ribbing never hurt no one!

If you guys ever get a chance, get a copy of "The Worlds most Dangerous Places" by Robert Young Pelton. He was a freelance reporter who traveled to Afganistan to cover the Russian offensive. One of the original offbeat reporters, he covers the world, with a "official" look at the makeup of each country and what makes it tick. But what is so great is that he then gives you the "unofficial" straight skinny on whats really going on! The section on the United States is mind boggling, With LA, and Miami leading the list, gangs, guns, drugs!
This is one fantastic book, and he updates it every couple of years. The inside info on several countries is just fantastic straight dope. Truth is always stranger than fiction is the key element here, and it can be brutally plain speak. At least google it! We get so messed up by the constant propaganda going around, it is great to see someone cut through with a razor sharp assessment!
To anyone in Europe who is offended by my statements or links regarding how gun control does not work, or how europeans should not interject themselves into the politics or culture of our country (which they know nothing about), than here is a big giant hug from me to you. Please oh please forgive me for standing up for my rights, and the rights of free men everywhere. My whole opinion about europeans being weak was derived from this very thread, listen to these zingers from SqeezyJohn:
*"It also means I FEEL far safer here ... even if I am not less likely to get shot ... does that make sense? If a nation feels less threatened by guns then they act less threatened and are much less likely to do something regrettable in a fit of paranoia."
*"I just can't see how the right to bear arms would help me as a proper upstanding member of the community"
* In response to someone saying they don't want the government telling they what they can or can't do: "Well thanks for your concern, but I do want someone telling me that I can't have [a gun]!"
*In response to PP noting that there are too many unregistered guns so it would be impossible to remove them all: "Thanks for the bottom line PP. Well it looks as if you're ****ed then! Good luck! I shan't be visiting any time soon. You're all crazy”…
I think Extreme put it best when he said that we should stick with what works for us and you lot should stick with what works for you. Talking about how intelligent you are and throwing out a bunch of "facts" without linking to any sources etc is what I would expect from somone trying to argue against freedom. Just face it, it is constitutionally protected as a right, and that is how it will stay. Of all of the many freedoms taken from us, we still have a small amount of freedom when it comes to protecting ourselves. Live with it.
Call us crazy all you want, be afraid to come visit if that's how you feel, but over on this side of the pond we do not want the government telling us that we can't own something because we may hurt ourselves with.
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
"Freedom or liberty is the ideal situation for all people, yet it is not so safe to be free. Of course, it's not so safe to be enslaved either and herein lies the difference between safety and liberty. Safety can often times be an illusion. You are free to build your home on a fault line, and as long as there are no earthquakes it is easy to believe one is safe. One earthquake is all it takes to shatter that illusion. No tyrant, no matter how powerful can shake the notion of freedom from those who've chosen to be free. No earthquakes, no natural disaster will destroy freedom like it can safety. Most people that die of accidents do so in their own home or 20-30 minutes from home. Home is a feeling of safety, until the moment we discover how unsafe life actually is.
When governments begin selling safety in exchange for liberty, deserving them has nothing to do with anything as governments will not guarantee your safety, but guaranteed they will take your willing sacrifice of liberty for the promise of safety. Why people who are willing to sacrifice liberty for the notion of safety are undeserving of neither is because they are so willing to sacrifice liberty and look to someone else to provide them with safety.

We don't use no stinkin beaters dude! We just go charging in on those helpless little buggers!
I watch videos of UK crimes and one of my irrational fears is being stabbed. It seems that there are a lot of stabbings over there. I mean if I have to die at the hands of a murderer, I most certainly want them to aim true and shoot straight, not aim true and cut deep.
Now I only said that to make you think about this. I have been in all 50 states, my works leads me to crowds, I am always in front of hundreds of people, as a salesman I have dealt with drunks, druggies, and people that are just pissed off. My one worry about all this has never been, NOR WILL EVER BE that someone will shoot me. I know that the only news you get over there form us is not about saving kittens and donating to the orphanage, all you get there are the sensational stories... just as that is all I see of your daily news. I cant see how someone can watch an excerpt on the news and make a judgement about another country and how safe they would feel. That is simply ignorant. I do not feel like if I go visit Great Britain or any other country with tough gun laws that I will be stabbed or beaten with a club.
If you drink the koolaid, you will feel fine.... No... The hiccups are supposed to happen.... now lie down...................... Your now safe......................... ......... .... ... .

My most highly recommended reading.
I love that book Whalen! Read it many times over. I wish he would update it, last edition was 2000. The guy is hilarious. I got so giddy when he was kidnapped by FARC while creeping around through the Darian Gap several years ago lol. If you shit the bed, you're gonna lie in it! He probably liked it though.

#1, my tomatoes are not "synthetic".
#2, So I am here posting facts from multiple sources, all drawing the same conclusions (that gun control does not reduce crime), but what exactly are you providing other than anecdotes about how safe you feel? How about some actual statistics from reputable sources and perhaps you can sway me, but like I said, this issue has been done a million times and the concensus is pretty clear.
#3, I never anywhere in this thread said that "no-one should even suggest that other countries are safer than [the US]". The US is extremely unsafe depending on where you live. I've lived in places where someone is shot within audible distance of my house on an almost nightly basis. I have also lived places where crime literally just does not exist, where there may be 1 or 2 crimes reported in an entire year and they are some kids doing something stupid but not that big a deal. The US is a big place, it's like the EU, but with 51 different little countries all of whom have their own culture and governance. There is a trend here that where gun control is toughest (Detroit anyone!) that the crime rate is the worst, and places where gun controll is more lenient the crime rate is the lowest.
But at the end of the day, crime is something independent of the method used to perform the crime itself, it is more about what leads up to someone committing a crime, it's about what the root cause of crime is. We need more education, more mental health services, a better drug policy, and more "love thy neighbor" type thinking so that our communities don't raise children who have no regard for human life. Banning guns isn't even in the list of things that will help crime here in America. We don't even have decent healthcare and have crazy unemployment here, with half the people living on $20k a year.
But you see, as someone who has seen firsthand how owning a firearm can be used to protect yourself and how crime can be prevented by having a firearm, I simply will never re-evaluate my opinion on it. My family would be dead had guns not been legal when I was younger and my father willing to use one. I don't know how the ghettos are where you live, but here they are worse than Iraq, literally. At least Iraq has a sense of community and culture, here is it all machismo and seeing who can be more vicious and "hard" than the other. They will break out your car windows to get the change sitting on your seat, they will stab and shoot you for simply being white, they have no regard for laws and law enforcement is unable to keep it under control.
You said your upbringing leads you to feel the way you do, and I respect that, because my upbringing has taught me the importance of being able to have a weapon capable of stopping someone (or multiple people) immediately from doing something bad to you. Therefore I, as well as millions of other Americans, are unwilling to tolerate even a single inches worth of more gun control. I would be afraid to live somewhere that guns were illegal, as then I would know that only the criminals have guns, and even worse yet, they know for a fact that I don't.

I have like four different volumes, I absolutely love the way he puts things together! Never met anyone else that has read him! I only wish I had read it before i went to Zaire though! That was close!
