The ipod has a GREAT interface, and that's why I have one instead of a sansa or something. Also, they can really take a beating. The only problem I have is that I've used up all of my 16gb (which is actually more like 15gb) of my ipod nano 5g.
I've handled the new ipod nano, the square shaped one, and tbh, it has lost a lot of functionality, and ease of use, and screen size for the gimmick of touchscreen. If I were to buy an ipod, I'd buy the 5g 32gb ipod nano, or a classic, since I already have an iphone, and an ipod touch would be redundant. The choice between nano and classic would be based upon your preference about clunkiness and disk space.

and then there is the option of Sansa, Zune, Sony Walkman etc. - you'd really have to handle them yourself, and really think about wether you're annoyed by the interface, and the ergonomics/buttons/appearance. I had a Sansa a while ago, I sorta kinda liked the interface, but the one on the ipods was just so much better, but I can't vouch for any other brand, although I have heard that Zune may be good.

Edit - the gypsies added a hidden app on the iphone that keeps tabs of your location with gps so they can go through your trash and steal your loved ones panties. You've been warned.
      Too bad so do Androids....
The lawsuit is against Apple AND Google.

Honestly. My first MP3 player was a Dell thingy...
        This:

It was nice because it was 30gigs and was the biggest thing out at the time and it was when the iPod only had the ORIGINAL one, which I hated the buttons.

I now have a 4-5 year old iPod Classic 60gig that is the SHIT!
It stays in my car and my 16gig iPhone houses my other crap.

Except the difference is iPhones don't send the information back to mothership whereas Android devices do.

Exactly. Supposedly the information is encrypted and isn't tied to the user.. But who is to know for sure.

Look at the source code. You can do that with Android. Give Jobs a call, and see if he'll send you the code for iOS ;^)

Get an ipod touch and jailbreak that bitch. The ipod touch is more $$$ up front but once jailbroken it will pay for itself in a week.

You can earn money with the iPod touch?

I was referring to all the free stuff that you would otherwise have to pay for.

Apple have their own battery replacement program. call apple care or make an appointment at the Genius Bar in the apple store. They test your ipod and if they confirm the battery has died or is depleted they replace your ipod there and then for about 50 bucks.

No excuse for not giving expendable parts easy access. That's like welding the oil filter on your car. It doesn't take a genius, or even someone merely average to tell when a battery's bad. Instead of wasting my time and petrol to drive to an Apple store(I don't even know where one is), I'd rather order a battery online, and have it shipped to me. A side benefit of doing it yourself is you can put in a better battery than it came with. I could swap a battery in an idevice myself, but I would be raging halfway through the operation because it's needlessly complicated, and is made that way to funnel more money into Jobs' pocket.

You get a better deal at apple they dont just replace the battery they replace the entire ipod so you get a refreshed everything. the technician has to diagnose that it is just a battery issue.

The battery at the above linked site is $23 shipped. That's less than half of what Apple charges, and I'd still have to drive to their shop at ~$4 per gallon of fuel. Changing out a whole device when a single part is bad is wasteful, and largely what's wrong with the western world. Aside from that, a phone shouldn't go bad other than the battery. Once it's burned in for a couple months, anything that's gonna break, should break. There's no reason a phone can't last until normal replacement time; ~5 years or so.

                              Edit:
Just checked Apple store locations for my area. The closest one is 19 miles away, so I'd have to add ~$9 to that replacement cost for driving, and that's not counting my time.

When you purchase a battery yourself it is cheap as you are fitting it. You may risk damaging the ipod, even if you are experienced you can always tell if an ipod/ipod touch iphone has been opened before. also if you break something you are screwed. When you use the apple service you dont have that issue as they replace your entire ipod with a new battery inside it.

This has its advantages as your original ipod will look a year or 2 years old. the ipod you get in exchange from apple looks shiny new. all for the small price of a battery replacement.

It is not wasteful as apple recycle your old ipod.

Swap repair is the best customer experience, you get your issue resolved within 5 mins into your technical appointment. You get a shiny replacement your 1 yr old device is recycled. No wastage, fast turn around.
