    The Rick Charles Project . . . . (Part 1?)

I just got a package in the mail containing a razor, owned by none other than our very own RickCharles. This razor is both a collectors item, and an heirloom, as it was formerly owned by Rick's Grandfather, and left to Rick when he passed.

It is a 4/8" Hollow Ground Genco, dressed in faux Ivory Bakelite scales. Genco Razors were made by Geneva Cutlery Co., in Geneva, New York. By 1912, they were the the largest US manufacturer of razors. They used the "GENCO" trademark from 1902-1935.

Rick sent this to me for a honing, but since he was so generous with a few "other items" in the package, I've decided to do what I think of as a "light restore". As it has sentimental value, we'll be keeping all of the original parts.

Here are some "before" photos. I'll be updating this thread, through every step of the process, from start to finish, as a token of my appreciation to Rick.

Now, the lighting I use for the "before" photos does exaggerate the blemishes a bit, but its really helpful to me to be able to more clearly see what Needs to be done.

Here you can see some staining on the scales, and some pitting/discoloration on the blade.

The other side, same story... Notice the 100 years of grime between the scales....not something you want to shave with.

As you can see where the light is glaring, the edge is very uneven, and is the reason Rick was having poor shaves with this blade.

Another one of the edge. You can see that the heel has been honed and worn down more than the toe, also contributing to an uneven edge.

So lets get this thing apart.

Here's a closer shot of the 100+ year-old-dirty-nasty-ass-funk that was hiding in between the scales.

Here we are after a couple hours of sanding, and a little bit of edge-straightening. The goal here is mostly to remove all of the discoloration and uneven-ness, and get the edge straight. Some of the pitting will remain, as removing it would take a much more intensive restore, with much more metal removed.

That's looking great Owens. I love the price on it, $3. While I'm sure that was a respectable amount when new, you couldn't get a Pakistani razor made from old saw blades for that now :^D

I love this thread. It has everything that makes this forum good, except, of course, for tobacco, so I will mention that now: tobacco is awesome.

Also, Owens, what do you use to straighten the edge of a razor like that? I have a couple of antique razors I have honed, and they both give pretty good shaves, but I would like to restore at least one of them completely.

It's just a mater of how much work goes into which part of the blade, until you get it even. You can hold the edge on a flat counter or other surface, and you'll pretty easily be able to see where it needs most work.

Other than that, it just a matter of proper honing on good stones, in succession from very rough( if needed), all the way down through barbers hones, and I like to finish on Arkansas stones. Ark stones are VERY slow going, but they actually polish and harden that edge which gives a buttery smooth shave, and a long-lasting edge, so in the end I feel it's worth it.
