Hey old man, I know how hard it is to pull yourself away from the dead hookers and all, but thanx brother, it means alot to me when folks appreciate the many hours of hard ass work that I put into these things! This one alone came out around 15 hours.....alot more than I planned. But it was for one of our own, so its all worth it in the end.

This razor was his Dad's, and he learned to shave with this very razor when he was a young man. He took it to Vietnam with him, and brought it home. Now I own it, and you too are part of this razor's history. Thanks so much my friend, I swear to god...the next time I'm in your area....dinner and drinks on me

Rick, honestly it was a pleasure. Hopefully with as much history as this piece has, you'll have the motovation to learn to weild this thing like you got a pair.....

Seriously though - I would KILL to have a razor with so much personal, direct, second and third-hand history. My God, the things this razor must have seen!!!! That fact alone makes it all worthwhile in my eyes. And, if you do get serious about it, you know I'm always here to lend some advice and technique! Anytime my brother, anytime. And about the drinks.....Im'a hold you to that!!

Okay, I got the razor in the mail last Monday morning on my way out of town, so I haven't had the chance to shave with it yet. However, tomorrow is the day, I will begin my journey with my Grand father's straight razor. I just got back into town today, and my Dad stopped by and I had to show him the finished product. He couldn't believe it was the same razor and thanked me for caring enough to send it to a pro to restore. Owens, thanks dude...even though this isn't a really expensive razor, it has significant value to the men in my family...and I will pass it to my sons as well. Chalk this one up to " I owe you dude"...just let me know

I'm glad it meets yours and dads approval. Means alot to me - really.

Now, about learning how to use it properly . . .

I tell ya dude, I'm no good with it, lol. I have to really work at this. I try to lay the spine very close to my face to get the right angle, but it seems that I have to increase the blade angle to make it cut, but then I get knicks and HELLA razor burn, lol. It's going to take some practice, and I need a strop. I'm waiting to pick one up on B&B in the BST. I'll keep at it, I will get this down

I just started shaving with a straight and it is quite the learning curve. Hey Owens, let me know if you need more projects to work on, I got a bunch of razors that need work that I have no time for. Seriously though, great work man, the razor looks awesome, and there really is nothing like shaving with a little bit of family history. Congrats Rick on your new venture with such a beautiful piece of work.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I don't know how you're holding the blade, but you need absolute control with a straight. You can't just lay it against your face like you can with a cartridge razor. Keep your arm kind of floating in position, and use short strokes to shave.

I had the same problem when I was learning - I used to tear myself up!

I use about a 30 degree angle WTG, and about a 15 degree angle ATG. But as usual, YMMV. Check out Mantic59's youtube videos, they were of great help for me when I was learning. Stick with it - you'll get it down! At least you now know its the technique, not the razor, lol!

Like lx said, you must have complete and total control over every millimeter of blade movement!

It's funny that you posted this tonight, because I have decided to "try again" tomorrow. I'll try the short strokes method lxskllr and I'll let you all know how it goes.

Side note: Tonight I tried a new aftershave, Pinaud Lilac Vegetal, dear god....it smells as if a cat pissed on my face, can't stand it. On the plus side, got a nice burn from it, and I love that in an aftershave. My absolute favorite aftershave is Booster Oriental Spice, nice burn and bracing effect, plus it doesn't dry my face at all, and after it dries down it smells fantastic.
