Star Scientific develops new moist snuff

    http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/heal...a_designation/

RICHMOND, Va.—Tobacco maker Star Scientific Inc. says it has developed a moist smokeless tobacco with lower levels of cancer-causing chemicals than any other tobacco product now on the market.

The small Virginia company, which sells tobacco lozenges that dissolve in the mouth, said Tuesday it plans to soon ask the Food and Drug Administration for approval to sell the new item as safer than any competing product.

Star Scientific hopes its products will be the first the federal agency allows to be marketed as less harmful than other forms of tobacco.

Star Scientific says the "modified-risk" label that the FDA is developing belongs on the new Stonewall Moist-BDL because it contains 90 percent to 99 percent less tobacco-specific carcinogens than other smokeless tobacco products.
I've been using Stonewalls occasionally and like them. Interesting to hear that they have developed a moist snuff with the same low TSNA levels. As far as I know it is not on the market as of yet.

Yesss. As long as it uses the SM Gotiatek or equivalent AND FDA approves it, this will be awesome news.

I wonder how it stacks up with Northerner snus. Northerner's is pretty damned low, and I'm wondering if Star's "lowest" contention is only in reference to traditional American oral tobacco.

It sounds like this will be a "dip" snuff. Hopefully they make a good snus product in the future.

I want to wait until the FDA gets the info on this product to see what's what....it could be all hype for a new product. Tomorrow the FDA is having a meeting to announce something...they won't say what either, only that it's concerning tobacco. We'll see

            Stonewall and the FDA
"The tablets contain tobacco's most addictive component, nicotine.

Star Scientific says its method of tobacco cultivation and preparation
creates tobacco leaves with low levels of some carcinogens
            ."

                Stonewall and the FDA

"GlaxoSmithKline, which makes nicotine replacement therapy products like Nicorette gum
and NicoDerm patch, has urged the FDA to take dissolvable tobacco off the market until
companies can demonstrate that selling them is appropriate for the protection of public health
                ."

Aren't we lucky to have big business looking out for our interests!!

I dunno..............call me a skeptic...............but snus from the labs of Star Scientific just don't have that Ettan years of tradition ring
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

This is good news! It sounds like Star Scientific is actually making the FDA think hard about nicotine replacement therapies and reduced harm alternatives. Too bad the big tobacco companies don't jump on board but the last thing they probably want is for people to think realistically about harm reduction.

Hmm, I'll give it a try as long as they don't charge a lot for it. I have doubts about the taste, I kind of liked stonewall java but something like that as a wad of dip would be too much.

That is a good point GV

Now whether or not the FDA will actually listen is another matter entirely.

Read a post on another forum from Bill Goodshall. He said this won't be released until it is approved by the FDA as a reduced risk product. It's gonna be a long time before we see this as the process is still a year away from being set up.

Knowing Star Scientific I would have to assume that this would be a spitless snuff. I'm guessing an ultra low TSNA type snus.

Wait so it won't come out until it's approved by the FDA. Let's see I'd say that I'll be .... um dead before that happens (I'm 20) hopefully I'm wrong the policy on tobacco could change, I can't think of when but whatever.
