I think it's a great idea. I browse snus sites on the john - so it'd make a great bathroom reader.

Thanks for the votes of confidence and the orders. We hope to at least meet everyone's expectations. Exceed them? Maybe. I can promise the first issue will be great.

Yes, if you didn't know, I'm the Editor.

I actually wouldn't mind snus and snuff ads, those aren't something seen in a magazine too often, with Camel being the exception. Anyway...I'm looking forward to issue #1!! I'm sure I'll read it and re-read it several times!

You will not see an ad for US Camel there as long as we are in charge. Although one ad from them would probably cover a years worth of our expenses.

I wouldn't shoot yourself in the foot over principle. Camel may be substandard from most of our points of view, but there's some that prefer it, even after having the real thing. If they still want to advertise after the knocks they take through various editorial commentary, more power to them. RJR money spends as well as any money :^D

Besides all that, it makes me happy seeing any tobacco advertising. It's a small FU to the government. The arenas have dwindled to almost nothing, so any ads I see are special, whether it's cigars, cigarettes, or crappy Camel SNUS; it's all good :^)

As far as a buisiness venture, I would accept paid ads from anyone, Camel, Copenhagen, Grizzly. I mean, smokeless tobacco, as a whole, does not have a magazine(that I have ever known of). And I think it should emcompass all of smokeless tobacco, if you want it to expand, and have wide appeal, and be profitable. But I would keep it balanced, with snus, nasal snuff, dip, and chew.

Lxskllr, first off, thanks for the good words!

I agree 100%- seeing an ad for any tobacco product makes the Henry Waxman's and the Hillary Clinton's of the world vomit in disgust, which is why I'm all for it.

I'm not even opposed to seeing ads for Camel SNUS, no matter my thoughts on the quality, in other magazines. Heck, I even support some of RJR's political maneuvering during this PACT business. But, you will not see an ad for Camel in our magazine.

I believe in journalistic integrity, and if you read our webite's mission statement, we vow to never cave in to the demands of advertisers. Based on past dealings I've had with people at RJR, we would not be able to both (a) continue to speak our honest opinion about Camel SNUS and (b) run advertisement for Camel SNUS simultaneously. It's just not feasible for RJR to sink money into a book that openly despises their "golden calf", so to speak. It's perfectly understandable, as well, from a business standpoint.

So, while one ad from RJR would indeed probably cover our entire annual printing budget, I would rather retain the trust of our readers over getting paid any day of the week. It was a decision that Mick and I came to before we even began working on the book.

Now, this puts us in a sticky situation when it comes to certain brands. I personally love Dental Snuff and Tube Rose- and I feel that it's high time that we see these old American Snuff Company brands advertised again. As you may be aware, RJR now owns American Snuff, so would they want to spend advertising money promoting their tiny nasal snuff line while we continue to speak our mind about Camel SNUS? The ball is entirely in their court. I would love to run an ad for Tube Rose snuff, so long as they don't expect me to shut up about the skeletons in their closet.

So to clarify, we won't necessarily turn down advertisements from companies simply based on whether or not they're from "Big Tobacco". Big Tobacco is kind of an unavoidable hurdle- RJR owns American, Phillip Morris is partnered with Swedish Match AB (who are themselves also very big tobacco), most of the small snus brands distribute through SM, etc. It starts to become a game of "six degrees of corporation"- just about every tobacco company is in bed, in some fashion, with every other tobacco company. Refusing to run ads from someone based on their size or influence would be kind of dumb on our part.

But we will refuse ads from companies that demand that we give them a good word, or try to shill us into giving out good reviews. And we will refuse ads from companies that we feel don't serve the best interests of the majority of our readership. The first offer I received for ad placement came from the guys at Chaini Khaini, and I turned them down based on the overwhelming opinion of our readership. Every single person I spoke to despises that snus, so why would I run an ad for it if not purely for money?

Sorry for the rambling first post, but I wanted to kind of let everyone know where we stood on advertisement dollars.
