    Just had a great smoke.

I was kinda bored and almost went to the bar to pass the mid-day heat, but decided to smoke a bowl and have some tea instead. I have a Peterson's Deluxe 01 that I bought about six months ago. Got it from IwanRies at a great price ($99 Retails for $250). I have tried and tried to enjoy this pipe, but the entire inside of the stummel was coated with stain and everytime I smoke it it tastes horrible. Finally last week I bought some everclear and swabbed it out real good. Lots of stain came out of it. So today, I figured I'd give it another try. I packed it half full with C&D Bayou Morning which I have been enjoying in other pipes very much. Made my tea, sat out back, and lit it up. I could tell after a bit that the pipe was much better than ever before. It did a fantastic job of smoking. I swabbed it with a cleaner a few times during the smoke and just took my time. Tasted great. No stain taste at all. Had to re-light it just a couple times towards the bottom of the bowl. I smoked it all the way to fine grey dust, which I can't always do. I think my technique is improving, and that pipe is now a champ. Feeling great, thought I'd share

You gotta scrape the resin out every now and again or it'll start to taste like ass.

Glad to hear your enjoying your sunday, lol.

Yeah, that's a common problem with certain Peterson models. Apparently they dip the entire bowl into the stain at the factory. More than a few pipers ream the bowl down to bare wood when they first get them.

I know. I've smoked the bowl stain out already, but most of the stain I got out of it with the everclear was in the mortise .

Yikes! Yeah, using a Dremel tool to ream the mortise would probably ruin the join. I guess Everclear would be about the only way.

Stick with natural unfinished briar and that problem will not rear its head. The well earned patina of use seems to me the best briar finish. Limits one's choices rather severely I admit.

I really like the idea of an unfinished briar, but I am pretty much set on smoking corn cobs as long as they are five dollars at the pharmacy three blocks from my house. I have a briar, its a comoy estate that I got for cheap, but I just love the corn cob. Smokes nice, super cheap and makes you look awesome.

I've been looking for cheap pipe tobacco but I can't seem to find any locally to try out.

Ah yes, the almighty cobs! I have about 20 of those and they are all great smokers!

Try drugstore type shops like wallgreens etc. The Rite-Aid stores out here sell corn cob pipes, Dr. Grabows, and a some pipe tobaccos. You should be able to find Prince Albert and Carter Hall pretty easy. If not, you can buy online. Lot's of great web shops. I've been using 4noggins mostly.

Dr. Grabows are okay if you can ditch the filter that comes in the things. I always found that the filter makes things worse not better. A proper straight through pipe is a far better choice but aside from cobs there are rarely any other choices in the drug/convenience stores.

In my experience, Super Value (examples here: http://www.pipesandcigars.com/suvapito.html) and similar bag tobacco brands actually are super values and really give a good smoke for the price. I prefer them to most packaged name brands I have tried (e.g., Prince Albert) and find that these bag tobaccos tend to give a smoother, cooler smoke and have flavoring that is closer to the bulk tobaccos you would find at a tobacconist. (The packaged brands have preservatives or something in them that tends to make for a hotter, harsher smoke. In my experience, the bulk bag brands don't seem to, or at least have less.) I puffed through mountains of the Super Value Black Cavendish (a pretty straight, mild tobacco flavor) back when I was living in a small town without a tobacconist nearby (ironically, in the middle of tobacco-farming country) and I had less disposable income.

Many drug stores carry Super Value or equivalent bulk bag tobaccos. Walgreens has (I believe, still) their own store-branded version. I prefer Super Value to the Walgreens version, but the Walgreens is also O.K. for the price.

Of the packaged name brands I have tried, Captain Black was always my standby.
