This is the pipe I started with. I found it to be the easiest and most approachable pipe for the beginner. (hell, i'm still a beginner - I still use this pipe).

Which one do you have? I have a ton and love them all. I kinda stopped using my hardwood MM cobs, but the rest are my mainstay.

MM's are hands down the best first pipe. They're cheap and easy to use and clean. I always tell anyone who is thinking about trying pipes to get one, and a pouch or two of Carter Hall or Prince Albert. Then, if they decide they like pipe smoking, they can think about buying a basket briar or two, and trying some new tobacco blends.
But they're not just for beginners. They make excellent "tasting pipes" for trying out new blends. Much better to have a "ghost" from a nasty blend in a cob, which you can throw away and replace for $5, than in one of your good briars.

I use a bunch of them because I'm still trying a lot of different tobaccos. It's nice not to have to worry about them. They do smoke great as well. My Country Gentleman's get smoked the most probably because some of the others are a bit small. But I do love them all. Missouri Pride is a favorite as is The General and the...ok I love all of them. I haven't bought a freehand yet, but I probably will. I also like the fact that I can get a brand new Legend just down the street at my local Rite Aid.
These pipes have such a history and genuiness (if that's a word). It's pretty awesome that they pay farmers to grow the right corn to make these because those strains of corn would probably be lost forever.
I have a decent briar collection going, but I tend to put more thought into what and when I smoke those.
