American Scotch Snuffs

So far I really like them. They are quite different which is nice for variety. I love having so many choices. I've been using Rooster and Bruton for those times I feel like living dangerously. Man these things can knock your socks off!

My favorite so far is Square. Rooster is a good nic hit, but for flavor I like the Square. I can't stand any of the sweet snuffs. I'm just not a sweet kinda guy.

I don't know what you are all talking about... Rooster and Honest are FANTASTIC! Good smoky flavor, a little goes a long way. It's way higher in nic content than the European stuff. It has the same consistency of a High Dry Toast, yet seems less harsh on the nose. Even if some gets to my throat, it simply makes me cough a little... nothing I can't handle.

I'm eager to try the sweets, especially Tube Rose. I remember Garrett was the first American scotch I tried back in the day, but I was a snuff wuss... I wanted my Ozona. The nose is a little more experienced now.

I dipped them too, and it wasn't bad. I'm not a dipper, and don't like to spit, but I'll try about anything. I preferred dipping the Scotch snuff over regular moist dip.

Wait...what? You can dip nasal snuff?

Scotch Snuff is generally used as oral dipping snuff. The use of it in the USA has mostly been as a dip, it's nasal use is more the oddity.

Well you learn something new every day. If one were to go to a local gas station would one be able to tell if the snuff one was looking at is Scotch?

Yes, though I only see it at grocery stores. They are stout little cylindrical round cans, not flat like dip/snus. You can see the variety of brands at MrSnuff and Nicrush.

Yea they have some of those at my local gas station. I haven't really gone over there and looked at them closely though. I might pick up a can or two. They just look huge, and would last forever.

so far i really like the Swisher Wild Cherry. but it hard to take on my n00b nose. tried to dip it just for why not and ended up with mud mouth.

Veganpunk, we Americans have the term dip because of Scotch snuffs. Older Southern Ladies still dip their " toothbrush", or hickory stick.

I live in South Alabama out it in the country, so that's why it's sold at our local gas station. That's pretty much all we have, 1 gas station, 1 country restaurant, and a very small post office. I've just never seen anyone use it. Everyone around me either smokes, or "dips".

There is an old document by US Tobacco Company that has articles on their snuffs, and it explains Bruton Scotch Snuff, and how people would sniff snuff, but then found it better in the mouth, and this led to the making of Copenhagen Snuff. I found the link to this old book at snuffhouse, it was interesting.

I have an interest in the Scotch Snuffs, and have gotten a few, and recently ordered some more. I like the look and the feel of the cans. The snuff themselves remind me of the High Toast a bit. They are pretty different than the European snuffs. I kinda feel like collecting them, and maybe put up a shelf and display them. They have a cool retro look about them. As a nasal snuff, they are different, sometimes I think I like it, sometimes I am not sure. I might dip them sometimes too, but even that way, sometimes I think I like it, sometimes I am not sure.

I picked up a few cans at the grocery this last weekend, Honest, Red Seal, and Bruton. There are some others that I have been interested in, which I ordered the other day, Rooster, Checkerberry, Maccoboy, Strawberry, Wild Cherry, Buttercup, Dixie.

I think my fave brand is the Swisher.

Anyone else here use these? Like these? Comments?

I like all of the American scotches; some more than others. I particularly like Honest and Three Thistles. They are good (and cheap) complements to my usual High Dry Toast. All of the sweets are interesting as well. I can't do those too often, but sometimes the mood is right.

Railroad Mills Maccoboy is the only snuff from anywhere that I simply cannot stand. Others disagree, and that's fine.

The packaging is compelling, isn't it? Since there is no advertising or other attempts at promotion of these snuffs, the companies that make them have pretty much allowed them to stay frozen in time, keeping their 1900–1930s canister designs unaltered. You just won't see illustrations and fonts like this on any other contemporary products.

I also think that there is something absolutely perfect about the size and shape of these American snuff tins. Other than Fribourg & Treyer, no other European manufacturer packages their snuff in cylindrical canisters. It's easier to handle, keeps the snuff more fresh and is a lot harder to spill than, say, a flat round Wilsons or Toque tin.

I don't really like American Scotch snuff's. I moved from Detroit to the mountains of East Ky. In school the mountain kids would all gather around a gas heater to dip skoal or copenhagen. They would spit in the furnace and American scotch snuff reminds me of the smell that was produced from this.
