K , here's my list of what I am growing this year:
Perique (20 seeds)
Rustica (20 seeds)
Virginia Gold (20 seeds)
Yellow Orinoco (20 seeds)
Turkish:
Bafra (10 seeds)
Balikesir (10 seeds)
Black Sea Samsun (10 seeds)
Izmir-Osbas (10 seeds)
That should leave me with enough, even if I end up with only 1/2 the number of plants as compared to the seeds I am starting. Actually, that will leave me with more than enough.
I've got all of the above started, except for the Bafra and Black Sea Samsun. I've got to run go get more dirt. I am not using the Jiffy greenhouses this year. Instead, I am using empty two liter soda bottles as greenhousees for germination, but will slice the tops off as soon as I see sprouts, to prevent damp off/dead seedlings at that point.

The Small Stalk is recommended for both snuff and cigars, and the Havana #608 was recommended for chew, so I figured that would probably work well with snus also. Since snuff basically is snus, I'll be trying both of those varieties for snus use. I know I'll never be able to top anything that Roderick makes for snuff, but I'll be experimenting with that too.Originally posted by snupy

I picked varieties that were said to grow well in northern climates or in the case of the Small Stalk BM, to be a smaller plant with a heavy yield. All 4 are recommended for either snuff/snus (for me), or cigars (for the hubby).

Most people seem to have trouble getting them from the point of sprouting to the point of transplanting. DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, feed them with fish emulsion when you first put them in the ground. Animals find fish emulsion to be quite tasty.Originally posted by sheilalynnI
It'll be more like an experiment this year since I'll be happy if I get even a little out of it and they don't die on me.
I had forgotten about them.Originally posted by sheilalynnI got mine from:

Snus recipes
But you can find many more if you nose around. I have dried leaves from a couple of plants I grew last year, but I probably won't make snus out of them until mid-May, although they are ready now.
Here's my size 12 shoe on a Virginia Gold leaf from last year:

I got several more exotic Turkish species this way. You might also find more information on what you need if you nose around in those forums.

speaking of which, does anyone have a snus recipe/directions for processing leaf into snus they would like to share? I have a crazy tobacconist down the street who I am sure I can just buy whole leaf from, and I would like to experiment without filling my house with toxic fumes/burning it down.

Seedman and Newhopeseed, although the selection at New Hope this year is much thinner than last. You can also get seed free from the US government, for research and education only, of course.Originally posted by texasmadeanywhere to buy seeds from? and if so which tobaccos would make for an interesting combination
I don't know as far as good baccys for snus. When I smoked, I liked Virginia/Turkish blends, so I have a few Virginia strains and several Turkish strains. I don't have any burley at all. Grow rustica if you want a higher nic kick though, cuz it's the highest. They go like this:
Turkish - lowest nic hit
Virginia - mid-range nic hit
Burley - almost highest nic hit
Cigs are usually blends of the above three. Rustica is higher than all of them, but I don't think it goes into commercial cig blends, although I have often wondered if it is used to create the high nic snus. I don't know where Perique falls on the nic scale, but as far as smoking it, it seemed VERY strong to me.

I'm going to try to grow Kentucky Burley. I have about 1/4 acre I can use, but I'm in the high dessert so I don't know how well it will go.

Who's growing baccy this season and what types are you going to grow? It's about time for me to start in this zone, so I am curious as to what others are doing.Tags: None
