I woke up this morning late, super hungover, and confused about exactly what went down last night ops: I had way too much fun last night and no it's not worth it ouch.

Anyways, I had to call in "sick" which kind of worked out because Mr. Mailman brought my snus kit and I had to sign for it. So I got my stuff

I was planning on taking a bunch of photos and stuff, but I was (still am) wrecked. So I just mixed up the grov kit and it's been in the oven for about 3.5 hours

The already baked sample is great! It has the look and feel of Kardus. I don't think it has any flavorings added. Just a a really clean and yummy tobacco taste.

The snus oven is at 200F and the snus mass is around 180 and slowly climbing

More to come when I'm feeling better

So it went in at 7:00 PM (Pacific). I have an extra coffee grinder that I am appropriating for tobacco (I also want to make snuff). I ground up the tobacco as fine as I could get it. It's not perfect, but I'm OK with GrovSnus. Boiled and measured out 50 ml of water and dissolved a bunch of sea salt in it. The recipe called for 3/4 tsp. but I didn't measure it. Tapped the ground tobacco in and stirred it around. Sort of a brown soupy glop. It didn't seem like that much so I doubled the recipe (just did it again).

Bought this cool black earthenware bowl at Goodwill on Sunday that I'm using. Plugged the small crockpot in - added a few inches of water - wrapped the bowl in saran wrap and put the lid on it. I'll let it go for five hours and add the baking soda. I'm going to keep checking it to make sure the water doesn't all evaporate.

I'm also thinking I might have to add some sort of flavoring to it, but I don't know what yet.

I was horrified when I went to buy the rolling tobacco. The last time I bought a large tin of the stuff (Drum) I could have sworn it wasn't more than fifteen dollars. The price has TRIPLED because of the new tax. Forty five dollars!

The pack of American Spirit I wound up buying set me back $11.39. I could see six dollars being a reasonable price for it. Outrageous!

        UPDATE:

Just took it out after five hours - it was pretty much the same except a little smoother and with a more even consistency. Put in the baking soda - it was pretty surprising when it started foaming up, I thought I might have a problem, but it stopped pretty quick. Added the mineral oil and some artificial vanilla flavor (second ingredient is propylene glycol). Replaced the water that had evaporated and put it back in. Going to leave it on while I sleep, I'll check it out in the morning..

Seems I lost a few hours. Didn't know gas ovens automatically shut off after 12 hours ops:

Snus mass cooled to 110F over night.

Snus mass has been rocking at 195F all day. I turned the oven off and back on to reset the 12 hour shutdown. It will auto shut off at 5am PST at which point I'm calling it "done". The smell is not bad at all, kinda smells like brownies baking I've been stirring it every once in a while and no clods yet. It looks great!

I am interested to hear how it turns out. Im WAY too lazy to try to make snus so I admire your efforts.

Ok, it's all chillin' in the fridge now. I have 5 different flavorings, so I mixed a tin's worth of each type and the rest is plain for now. It needs to hang out in the fridge for a couple days before any real flavor can be expected. I have tried a couple prillas plain and it is good, but not much flavor really. Time will tell.

The recent SCHIP tax increases make ryo baccys a waste of money. The smart ryo baccy companies are selling ryo baccys as 'pipe cut,' which are therefore taxed as pipe baccy. This one is available in a natural blend for $17.95 for 12 oz, which, after shipping is added, is slightly less than $24.

Can't wait to do this myself, although I won't be able to until after the first of the year most likely.

                        Update:

I would have to call my first attempt at snus making a success! It's pretty good. Black currant is my favorite flavoring out of the five, but none of them are overpowering at all. The flavored versions taste mostly like the plain non-flavored.

The snus has a great tobacco smell and taste with what seems to be just the right amount of salt.

I like to use many different snusii in a day, and that has not changed. So I've been using about 2 prillas of the home made snus per day. Honestly, it's not my favorite, but I think I could have done a better job baking it. It just doesn't have the moisture and consistency of factory made snus. The pre baked sample that I received is a closer match to factory made snus.

I might not have baked it long enough. I'm guessing that it didn't sweat as much as it should have. It seems a bit dry and crumbly, however, it bakes into a real nice pris with firm pressure and stay together very well.

The other thing I might have done wrong is added the sodium bicarbonate before the cooking process. The PrimaFint video and the translated instructions from primafint.se show and tell you to add it after the salt (dissolved in water) and before the baking. Other instructions from other sites seems to suggest baking the snus until it is almost done and then adding the sodium bicarbonate (or whatever you want to call it) for the last leg of baking.

Anyways, it's pretty damn good for a first attempt and I still have the finer ground kit to bake. I could definitely get by using this snus all the time if needed, but I seem to like variety better. I will continue buying factory made snus as well as tobacco I can use to make my own. I also plan on growing some tobacco myself next year and making snus with it.

I plan on putting in some tins of my snus into "Box" for people after me in the "Box Pass" to try if they want to.

                        Cheers!

Does anyone here know enough about tobacco to suggest a readily available (in the US) pipe/rolling tobacco for the purpose of making homemade snus that would meet the requirements of the Swedish FDA?

Mr. Snuff...you might just have to put a few cans on the exchange to sell!

How financially viable is it compared to the store bought snus. Price per can wise I mean.

                                Good question badfish.

I was just researching how to grow tobacco, harvest, and cure. Here is a good article for anyone interested. Sounds like burley tobacco might be the one to grow...

This tobacco sounds good.... I think I am going to try and grow this along my back fence. After reading the article above, it sounds like the perfect place for it.
