Golden Blend is the worst chewing tobacco that I’ve ever chewed. From what I can tell, it is a blend of tobacco that is typically used in the manufacture of cigarettes (Virginia tobacco? possibly mixed with some burley?) coated in a generous amount of molasses.
Original, which I just tried today, is amazing! It tastes like a strictly darker leaf (perhaps straight burley?) with noticeably less molasses. There is a bit of a smoky flavor that comes through.
To those who enjoy chewing tobacco and snus, if you are familiar with the taste of Redman Original and Ettan, how would you compare their taste profiles? It’s a given, that the Ettan will obviously not be a sweetened product like the Redman, but once you get past that difference, how do you think they compare flavor wise?

The other thread on chew got me thinking about it. I pick up a bag of Beechnut once in a great while but I might try Levi and Redman too. Snuff is out as I was diagnosed with COPD a few yrs back. Don't smoke kids m'kay?

Years ago, I was loving chew.... it was great... my fave was Levi, but Redman and really all the ones I tried was good. I haven't had any oral tobacco in years... I don't even know how many... many times I think about getting a can of dip, I was thinking of some Copenhagen Pouches... but since it's been so long, I am unsure if I want to. These days, I do have some nasal snuffs, which I partake of maybe twice a week, and I usually have 3 cigs when I visit my buddy sometimes twice a month.

It is perfect for plowing/shoveling snow. Just not as perfect as other warmer weather activities.

Man it has been a long time since I have had chew. But it sounds perfect for shoveling snow!

Redman Original, Redman Golden Blend and Levi Garrett
Wow! My hunt around town for General Snus brought be to a few new tobacconists. Sure enough, I saw a pouch of Redman sitting behind the counter and it piqued my curiosity. I remember loving the small of it as a kid, but I never tried it.
Skip ahead and I threw in a big cheek full of Redman Original. I shoveled and plowed some snow, and realized. This stuff tastes great! I always liked dip, but hated spitting. This stuff makes me not mind the spitting so much. After trying the original, I bought a pack of Levi Garrett and Golden Blend to compare. I actually preferred the Redman to Levi. I kind of like raisin/prune smell. To me, it's a tobacco smell. I've smoked cigars that had that raisin note. I've always attributed it to the variety of tobacco.
Levi had less of that flavor, and more of an herbal note. I thought I'd prefer that, but it turns out I wasn't crazy about it. I do think the Levi held up a bit better in the mouth, but it also had more stems then the Redman.
The Redman Golden Blend was also very good. To me the flavor was almost exactly the same as original. I'm guessing the differences in the "blend" is more about the tobacco leaves used and not the flavors added. The tobacco seemed to have fewer stems and have slightly larger pieces then original. Otherwise, it was very close.
Glad I got to chalk these off the bucket list. Looking forward to nice weather so I can actually relax on a porch and enjoy it. Spitting inside throws me off.Tags: None
