    Hi,

The production cost of minis and standard size portions are roughly the same. There is fever portions in each can because of consumer insight studies that told us that the mini consumer were using less portions.

This seems like a nice way of saying "because we can". So let me get this straight. If mini users start consuming more snus you would be open to the idea of adding portions? If anything, minis should either cost less or have more portions.

      Minis, standard portion and price

What the guys are saying is that the tobacco and portion material have relatively no cost relative to the rest of the product.

The labor, cans and labels are most likely over 95% of the production cost of the product.

Additionally, as minis are a small part of the mix, they probably pay a higher price for the smaller cans due to smaller order volumes.

Also, from the standpoint of category management, in Sweden, during the last two massive, and weight-based, excise changes, Swedish Match subsidized the increased taxes on loose in order to maintain price parity in retail across the various ranges and segments.

For example, General must cost 38 SEK per can in order to maintain a stable consumer base. This covers General portion, white, mini, silver, loose, etc. because it's always been that way (this is not visible in Internet shops because the products are sold tax-free). SM and other companies reduced loose gram weight to 45g (or less) in order to easee the tax burden.

The cost TO Northerner, Buysnus, etc. is the same, so it's passed on to the consumer.

Why does lös cost the same as regular portions, when lös has almost twice as much snus as portions? Shouldn't a can of lös cost almost twice as much as a can of portions?

aj, got into that above. The portioning process is more expensive than the tobacco. The tobacco is probably almost free for Swedish Match, but the machining for portions costs money. Also, he said lös prices are subsidized by higher prices on portions. Sweden taxes by tobacco weight, so SM distributes the burden throughout the line to keep prices moderate for all products.

It's true. Even when I smoked I was sensitive to nicotine. I smoked ultralights, but there were some ultralights I couldn't handle, due to being too strong.

Regular portions are too strong for me. Minis are much closer. However, los is the best. I can do even 1/2 of a click with a 3ml Icetool and that tiny nic hit satisfies me perfectly. In other words, I would probably really get off on a mini-mini-portion, except it would cost the same as a can of mini-portions, so I would have to go whine about the price in the whiners thread.

I'm a bit of a lightweight when it comes to snus, I prefer minis most of the time but don't like paying double for the privilege, I get past this by simply rolling a standard portion between thumb and index finger in the middle of the portion, back and forth along the length, this compresses the two halves into nice equal mini portions, a quick tear and then in it goes, the other half stays together even when alone in a tin and being shaken around. I do this pretty much all the time, takes literally a few seconds, no mess and you get a nice pouch to hold it in (as opposed to using los which I'm not keen on, prefer no mess). Obviously it takes a bit of practice, the key is the direction you roll, along the length not the width. Also good for a more discreet standard dose as you can create two compressed halves and pop one in each side. Works great with long portions like 01 too.

This would be useful for certain portions that taste better in regular white than in mini (like goat rape or Catch eucalyptus or LD Black, which doesn't come in a mini.) However, I am such a cheapskate I really like the fact I get so much more snus in loose than in portion.

                    welcome to Snuson Snus Hog

Interesting strategy, have never heard anyone else doing that before. If you are a true mini fan, then hell yeah, 48 minis for the same price as a can of mnis, why not??

Just curious how long have you been using snus? Were you a smoker before??

Hi Sage, thanks for the welcome. In answer to your questions, I’ve been using snus for just over four months. I have smoked on and off over the last ten years, I would say mostly off, I get the urge to smoke at different times of the year it’s funny, roll ups in summer, pipes in autumn, cigars in winter, then guilt for spring. My snusing has stayed pretty constant since starting, it was 3 standard portions a day, now it’s 6 minis (ie 3 divided standards), I prefer to not chase the dizzy snus dragon, but just sneak up on him and give him the occasional stroke. The downside of snus is that I don’t enjoy a nice roll up of Golden Virginia so much anymore, that’s also an upside I guess.
