Since kids seem to become immune at an early age to the grotesque...

Someday, the kid will see a pic of a diseased liver on a pack of cigs and say, "Look mommy ... isn't that what we had for dinner yesterday. I want that pack of candy. Please, pretty please."

Thanks, FDA ... mommy loves you for saving the children.

Yeah, I started saving all my plastic snus tins for potential later use. I got some Jaks with bigass warnings and the glue takes off the sweet paint job when you peal the stickers off

I just got a batch from Northerner, they all have really huge, annoying stickers or labels on them. I really could care less about what the tin looks like, but it definitely brings up questions from my wife when I explain to her that it's much safer than cigarettes and not to worry, then they slap these huge things on there that basically yell "come and get your cancer here!"

If you freeze the cans the labels might come off easier. The rectangular ones that Northerner started putting on come off real easy. Not so much for the big round stickers. I've also saved a few old cans to transfer it into. I mean if I'm going to introduce a smoker to this stuff I don't want it to look like it's worse than the cigs. I tend to think it's more of a CYA thing for the government rather than protecting the populous. The data to support harm reduction is clear...but to think a government can think clearly...heh...fat chance.

They wanna inhibit anything that takes away from their big tobacco money connections. Foreign snus doesn not line their pockets like Marlboro does.

The biggest problem I've noticed concerning Swedish snus and the implementation of the FDA regulations is the cost factor.

US snus consumption hasn't risen to the point where a complete remake of the packaging is feasible at this time. Easier and cheaper to just plaster on a butt-ugly set of labels. The time-factor probably played a part also: It's really hard coming up with tasteful apply-on labels that would pass FDA muster.

In the case of cigarettes, already-entrenched smokers won't heed the upcoming mandated labels anyway. But with snus being a novelty at this point, along with the rash of negative pronouncements by the media, second thoughts will take precedence over common sense for the uninitiated.

"Better to hack away than take a chance on this newfangled snus that Camel and Marlboro just invented!!"

Yeah but it's only a matter of time until they see the huge warnings, and then they'll be like "hey, you lied to me, this stuff will kill me!". I think it's better to just be upfront and say, listen the government is clueless (no surprise there), these warnings are BS and if you want proof I'll email you a bunch of links...

I wonder if they'd allow these companies to put labels on the remaining part of the container that say, "don't listen to the other labels, it's just BS we're forced to put on here"

They'd just say, "oh... the internet... yeah, right, then it must be true...."

I wish I could be as optimistic as you, Rob, but my rose-colored glasses have really faded.

If someone has their mind set to a certain thought, 'a bunch of links' are pretty useless.

Now, some good sound-bites, which require no work or extra web activity, or objective thinking -- now, that's the ticket! Think we can get FoxNews to go along; or MSNBC?

                                Nah!
