Okay, let me get this straight...

If it had no tobacco, it would be pretty much like all other approved NRT products.
But since it does contain tobacco there's no way this will be approved (says FDA)!

So it's the tobacco itself that's purified? By steam?
In what way is this actually different from all other Swedish tobacco?

The process must be proprietary so I imagine any information
not provided by Northerner would be purely speculation or the
    work of a closet-scientist!

(So many questions before the coffee is even ready!)

      [scratches head] OK, still confused..

Let me put it another way. Why is this stuff attractive? Does it taste nice? Or is it for people trying to cut down on the nic?

I'm still awaiting my PENDING order of WON from Getsnus.

But Dan graciously sent me a few samples pre-PACT.
The one I have under lip right now has a very mild lemon taste...
It has to be either Citrus/Menthol or Citrus/Licorice but the flavors
are so mild that I'm perplexed; in other words, I have no clue.

As for a nic hit.. not much to my reckoning but then I'm almost
totally into the stronger (9-16 mg) portions to help combat a
very long and heavy smoking habit. The Boost/Energy, though,
might be a better bet but of course I didn't order that one since
it wasn't even listed at the time of my (now PENDING) order!!

(NOTE: The citrusy/lemony flavor isn't bad when I suck on the bag!!)

I imagine all nicotine replacement products are proprietary, so each one would have to go through extensive testing to prove it's safety. Not a huge deal for a huge company, but virtually impossible for small company. Being a tobacco product avoids it altogether.

Why are they desirable? It's tobacco for people that don't like tobacco :^D No tobacco flavor, no tobacco juice. It also keeps forever. After the missile exchange, Wise/Oomph/Northerner would be the product to have.

It has a little tobacco taste. Much less than regular snus though. It's closer to Camel snus, but it tastes better, and it's not sickly sweet with artificial sweeteners.

Found some info while searching for purified tobacco and the lowest levels of TSNA on the market.

There were two products that concern us.

                One was Stonewall.

                The other was Wise/Oomph/Northerner:
Tobacco products with low nitrosamines level patented

                01 Feb 2007.

Njette AB, a Swedish company, has been granted patent protection for tobacco and nicotine products with the lowest possible level of tobacco-specific nitrosamines.

The patent states that neither the tobacco industry nor the pharmaceutical industry can produce nicotine products with similarly low levels. Njette AB has applied for patents in several countries.

Tobacco-specific nitrosamines can be found in all tobacco and nicotine products, in cigarettes and snuff, as well as in nicotine based pharmaceuticals for helping people to stop smoking (chewing gums, plasters etc.).

Njette has developed a snuff (“Wise”) with the market’s lowest level of tobacco-specific nitrosamines, reports the company. Wise is for sale in Sweden and will soon be introduced in Norway. (ci)
Remember now, "Wise" became "Oomph" which became "Northerner" ... WON

Njette AB (now called Snusbruket TillCe AB) is the developer/manufacturer, and holds the patent on the process. Northerner, it seems, is the exclusive distributor.

Interestingly, I found this in the Snuson Archives:

Star Scientific's dissolvable tobacco bits are Stonewall and Ariva.
I'm fairly sure that Star has its own patent for their tobacco and their endgame is much the same as TillCe: developing products that have the lowest levels of TSNA on the market.

                THE QUESTION:
"In what way is this actually different from all other Swedish [snus] tobacco?"

                THE NON-SCIENTIFIC ANSWER:
                "Huh!!"

                Am I right??

That's awesome. I tried the Wine & Dine flavor; nothing secial; nic hit with pepper. But, I love the idea of offering a protion of Vin & Kocksuns to someone. I would order rolls to give away by name alone.
