Question For Snus Users in Michigan.

Hello everyone, I'm new on this forum, and it is nice to meet you all. I discovered snus when Camel snus was first introduced. I did not like it at all. This started my search online and I discovered swedish snus. I am now an avid snus user. I stick with the General brand mostly do to the fact that I can get it right down the street in this classy little cigar shop. They carry General brand mint, wintergreen, and original. I have been wanting to try other brands from online sites so yesterday I placed a small order with Northerner.com I ordered 6 cans of various brands mostly from Swedish Match. And selected 2nd day air via UPS for shipping. Everything is being shipped from the U.S. distribution center. After I had placed my order I was talking to a friend about it and he said ordering online is illegal. I was like WHAT! So I did some searching online and Found this statement on the Michigan website: "It's a crime to purchase cigarettes and other tobacco products by mail, over the internet, or in any other way unless the seller is properly licensed by the State of Michigan and each pack is affixed with a Michigan tobacco stamp. Violations are punishable by up to five years imprisonment along with seizers of assets of anyone possessing illegally purchased cigarettes".
Now after reading this I am a little freaked out. I know I will not be able to cancel my order. And I really do not want to try. But I am wondering if I need to be concerned with this. It's not even a large order. Is there anyone else on here purchasing online in Michigan? Have you had any issues? There is also a section on filling out a document to pay the taxes on the orders place online, however on the bottom is says that after paying the taxes I does not make the tobacco legal and it is considered contraband. Now that statement is sure not gonna have me filling it out. I don't mind paying the tax. But not at the expense of being fined or worse. I will most likely not place any more orders online after this.
I do have a question for Northerner.com also if they read this. Is your company Licensed with the State of Michigan to sell tobacco here. I'm not really sure on how all these procedures work. And with the PACT Act starting which you stated on this forum that you will be complying with, will I be able to make orders legally than?

Thank you everyone for you input on this

    Welcome to SnusOn!

Don't sweat your order. I'm sure we've had Michiganers here place online orders, and there's other states people order from where tobacco is verboten and they get deliveries no problem. What I would suggest is make any orders you plan on making before the end of June. That's when PACT kicks in, and there'll be a reporting mechanism in place.

Besides, Northerner will be licensed in Michigan soon enough. I have it on good authority

I think i'll be alright too. I do tend to take some things a little too seriously. But is seems to be geared more towards cigarettes. Even though them mention "other tobacco products" the primary focus is in cigarettes. I am staring to think it's more of a "smoke and mirror" tactic, to attempt to get people not to do it.

Yeah it's like downloading music illegally. Except with snus you can't get it locally or have a very limited variety which is why people order it rather than to avoid taxes. I've heard the worst that happens to people who order cigs online is that they get the tax bill. The amount of taxes the government would make off snus is probably the cost of 1 hour in Iraq or bailing out a regional bank, something like that. It's stupid people have gotten tobacco in the mail for hundreds of years through mail order catalogs and they decided to just ban mail delivery.

Most of these types of states have instituted these laws to curtail online sales of tobacco products that "skirt" the tax laws. Once I've explained what we're doing and obtain the necessary licenses, and explain that we are willing to collect and pay the taxes, they (most of them) agree and move on. That's been my experience thus far, and Michigan was no different. Just an FYI....

I've been ordering online for a few months now from Michigan and I've had no problems what so ever. I've ordered from a few different online retailers using both UPS and the USPS. I don't think you have any thing to worry about.

Where do you get it from locally? I live in Lansing and I haven't seen any in the tobacco shop I go to.

Hello all! I googled about trying to find Snus in Lansing, michigan and came across this post.. I joined just to tell a little story about my dad's friend.. this is what happened:

My parents friends were ordering cheaper cigarettes from out of state.. they had been doing it for around 15 years or so... Well the place they were ordering from got raided for selling things online (8 or so years ago) the company in turn turned over there customer list and they got a knock at the door from the A.T.F yes the A.T.F! They seized about 500 illegal copied DVD's movies and charged them the tax that they did not pay PLUS a $50,000 fine.. they almost lost there house and the funny thing is is they gave back the bootlegged DVD's but slapped them for the cigarette tax.. basically they gave them a choice.. either pay the back tax plus fine OR take the charge of bootlegging DVD's which carries a hefty fine and jail time so they chose to pay the "fine" and in turn they let them keep the bootlegged DVD's.. now I am not trying to scare anyone BUT if any of these companies are required to tell the Gov at any time who there customers are you best believe they will hand it over... that's what happened to them, the company they were dealing with were in shady business practice and they handed over there customer list and the ATF agency literally enforced the law on he customers! That being said I am NOT to concerned about it though .. about to order me some Green Apple Snus as we speak! Hope this story finds you well and thought I would chime in .. thanks for having me!
