    Customs duty over charge.....

This past Wednesday I received a snus order that was shipped via UPS. It was for 13 cans. I almost fell over when the driver said there was a COD fee of $132.05 . $127.05 duty was assessed on the pkg, along with a $5.00 brokerage fee for clearing it with customs.

I just got off the phone with the UPS Customs/Brokerage office in Philadelphia. After explaining my situation, the pleasant lady informed me that someone had charged at a rate of 350 %, which for snus was completely wrong. The re-calculated duty came out to $6.49, along with a $5.00 brokerage fee. This I can live with. She said they'll be sending me a refund. I'm so relieved. It was the 1st time getting clipped for Customs/brokerage fees. So at $11.49 total I can't really complain !!

    Happy snusing

I ordered from Northerner, but they're not to blame. The package contents were listed as "Scandanavian Products", and had not been opened by customs. Someone at the customs/clearing center just wanted to see how close I'd come to having a heart attack !!

You got charged this shipping to the US? I have never heard of anyone else being charged. I have made at least 30 orders and nothing. I have read here that anything under $200.00 was fine. I might just have to look it up.

This seems to happen sometimes when using UPS. I have never heard of it happening when people use the USPS.

I buy from buysnus, and they mark their custom form as "Swedish snus'. My order was $70 - 23 tins. As far as I know, if you keep it under $200, you won't get dinged through the USPS.

I can't imagine what would require a 350 % customs duty charge & I'm so glad I can't include it in my "pleasures".

                Re: Customs duty over charge.....

I received my refund check from UPS today. The total recalculated cost was a follows:

                $0.25 customs duties
                $1.69 other Govt charges
                $5.00 Brokerage Charges

I'll use the $125.56 refund to make snus purchases in the future.

I use buysnus.com, and have so far had no issues with tariff/taxes/duty. I'm satisfied with their shipping, as it is only about a week or so, and it's less expensive than UPS (USPS has so far been good to me). I've never heard of anyone having any issues with USPS, besides being sometimes slow to deliver.
